Escape from the Ambush: Game 10

General Summary

The Party fought a brutal battle against orcs, orogs and an owlbear before relying upon the magic of Odium Moulim to escape down a cliff to a stream that meanders through a mountain cleft. The party’s two trackers, the Ranger and Druid, both agree that the better route is down stream. Haste is necessary, as it is clear that the orcs and their masters are determined to pursue them, or at least pursue the magic scimitar. The orcs have begun firing arrows down at the party and running along the top of the cliff looking for paths or other ways to reach the stream. They are determined to finish their job.     The key learning from the battle is that the orcs want Ankili mac Aevyrn scimitar, which the party stole from the apothecary necromancer Gravon Pitt of the Order of the Necromantia. During the battle, Ankili attempted to return the scimitar to the orcs, but decided to keep it. He also prevented members of the party from taking the scimitar from him. At the end of the game, I (the DM) made a remark that it was Ankili's "precious", similar to Gollum or Frodo's desire for the ring. This is very different, and that was a bad analogy. Ankili does not appear to be under the control of the ring, or inappropriately coveting it. Instead, he appears to have genuinely reconsidered whether it should be given to the orcs, and decided that the scimitar is worth keeping because it is more to the party and your overall mission than giving this powerful magic item to the orcs to use against the party (overall mission at: Tar Eneemena: Preface to Game 1).
