Calcaria
Calcaria is a witch settlement located near Whitby, UK in Britannia. It is an isolated village that operates entirely independently from United Britannia and Hibernia's Council and Magisterium. Like all witch settlements, humans cannot enter the village, but Calcaria is unique in that the village also hides from other witches; however, witches from outside of Calcaria can obtain permission to enter, although that is rare. Unknown to the Magisterium and Council, Calcarians have contact with humans (however, the humans do not know the Calcarians are witches). Calcarians work closely with humans to regulate mining, since jet is prized by humans, and witches also attempt to aid humans with their fishing by magically controlling the weather.
Demographics
Calcaria is 100% witch.
Government
Officially, Calcaria is governed by the Council and Magisterium. However, Calcarians do not feel as though they need to be governed by United Britannia and Hibernia and if the issue was pressed, Calcarians would declare themselves independent of the Council and Magisterium.
Industry & Trade
Calcaria's mining industry is the basis of Calcaria's economy. About a third of Calcarian inhabitants are miners (mining is aided largely by magic), and the other two-thirds are fishers, jewelers, and other careers.
Infrastructure
Besides mining, Calcaria depends on several ponds to raise exotic fish that many humans cannot breed in the UK. Calcaria is home ot the second largest Old Religion shrine and is also home to an historical archrive that rivals the Great Library.
Assets
The biggest asset of Calcaria is the famous Calcarian jet, similar to Whitby jet. Calcarian jet is an extremely valuable gem; it is a strong conduit for magic. Calcaria is one of the only settlements that does not take funding from the Council; their finances are bolstered by the Calcarian jet.
Guilds and Factions
There are three main factions in Calcaria: miners, jewelers, and others. Miners and jewelers are considered the most important factions, although other jobs are not held in low regard. Because the miners and jewelers regulate Calcarian jet, those factions control the economy of Calcaria.
History
Calcaria was inhabited in 543 CE by witches interested in mining Calcarian jet. In the 19th century, Calcaria was a town famous for its ribaldry; the constant stream of visiting and greedy miners brought with them a "party" atmosphere and the permanent residents of Calcaria became unhappy with the debauchery and decided to isolate themselves from tourists and outsiders.
Architecture
Much of Calcaria is filled with whitewashed stone cottages and stone and brick buildings; most roofs are colorful, and red is the most popular color. A new building in Calcaria is rare; most buildings are from the 19th century and older.
Geography
Calcaria is a seaside town that borders the North Sea. It is also surrounded by moors and is located in a valley surrounded by small mountains; as such, the geography lends itself to the isolation Calcarians crave.
