The Nest

Sphere: Criminal   Like any city, Ur has always had a poor district, usually around The Maw. When the Dimensional Blight infected the city 300 years ago no one who had any choice wanted to live in afflicted areas. The blight causes space to get corrupted, usually manifesting as streets moving, but it can cause houses to disappear along with their occupants.   Two Cart Road is the main street through the Nest, called such because it has the width for two carts to pass side by side. The road loops around the Nest, like a giant, misshapen horseshoe. Most other roads connect to Two Cart Road, like crooked spokes, weaving their way through the mess of shabby, run-down buildings and shacks. Scattered market stalls and hawkers line the main street trying to sell whatever wares they have.   While the Nest is the home of the poorest and the most downtrodden, the Knights of the Road try to impose some order on the decaying mess. They have organised regions for each of the major gangs, they try to keep the streets tidy and enforce their own form of law which, while sometimes harsh, is generally considered fair by the denizens of the Nest. Despite what the upper classes think, the Nest is relatively ‘safe’ for those who do not draw the ire of the Knights of the Road, as they have no hesitation in putting down trouble with sudden and extreme violence.   There are also various establishments throughout the Nest (though closer to the borders) that are cleaned up for ‘out of district’ visitors. Ale houses, gambling and all manner of vices are on offer to those with the coin to spend. These serve to draw some wealth into the district and give the locals options for making a living, though most spend their pay as quickly as they earn it.
