Somnal

Somnal, more commonly known as the Ethereal or the Domain of Spirit, overlays the Terrestrial Realm, hidden from eyes by the Misty Mantle but always present, if one knows where to look, and where to step. It is not a separate place, per say, but rather a different "frequency" of existence, itself sometimes thought of as a "fifth element" to the classical four. Some describe it as having a "green" hue and glow. Vapors of the Ethereal that intrude upon the Terrestrial are known as "ether," while more solid material is called "ectoplasm" or simply "plasm." Certain incorporeal beings such as ghosts and monsters such as though eaters are, in fact, ethereal creatures, and exist "physically" in that domain rather t han ours. Even if one is not ethereal, one's soul is material within the Ethereal, though its shape and strength can vary from individual to individual, and this is what makes the presence of beings able to manipulate or travel the Ethereal such a frightening prospect to many. It has some connection as well to the realm of thought, and when one dreams it creates a "bubble" within Somnal that others who know the means can travel to, a practice known as oneiromancy. It is quite often influenced by both Faerie and Erebus, and forms as something of a liminal barrier between those domains and the Terrestrial Sphere.   The esoteric god Dhoad claims the Thrones of the Principle of Spirit here, and is the only known living deity to have its origin in the First World (the Firstborn of Faerie claim this too, but there's much reason to disbelieve them). His personal sanctuary within the mists of the Ethereal is called in Old Cradish Annwn Tor, which is sometimes used by northron Talireans to refer in poetry to Somnal as a whole.
