Typhon Expanse (Tie-fon)

The Typhon Expanse is a previously unexplored section of space located Galactic North of the Federation-Romulan border. The path between the Federation and the Typhone Exapnse has long been blocked by the Hellsmouth Nebula, the remains of a star that went supernova early and expelled volatile hydrogen gas across tens of light years of space. This gas is constantly igniting creating an extremely dangerous navigation hazard.
In 2376 the Unknown Alien Dreadnaught seemingly bored its way through the nebula creating a safe subspace passage allowing the Federation to explore this region of space for the first time. 
In 2377 the first expedition, a joint Federation-Romulan venture, was launched using the USS Nightingale, a Nova-class science vessel.
