Dark Summit

The southernmost of three large stratovolcanoes in the Wet Nest that trend southwest to northeast obliquely perpendicular to the Vulture's Nest Mountains chain. It is known to have an active lava lake within its crater. It contains volcanic caves. When the lava in the lava lake grows more viscous due to continuing degassing, an eruption becomes more likely. The upper part of the Dark Summit is permanently covered by snow and has some 15 square miles of glaciers. Ash coverings from the eruptions can be thicker than 5cm and insulate the glacier and the snow peak, decreasing ablation instead of enhancing it and giving the snow the dark coloring that gives the volcano its name.
