Hill Giant

Gluttonous and primitive, the hill giant is the smallest and stupidest of the true giants and takes their name from their propensity to reside in hillside caves. They average around 16' tall, with larger males reaching around 17' and females tending to be a bit shorter, at around 15'6". They tend towards the obese due to their neverending hunger, with most weighing between 4,000 and 5,000 pounds. However, some almost immobile giants have been reported as weighing as much as ten tons.   Spending much of their life out in the sun, their skin varies between a light tan and a reddish-brown. Their hair and eyes, curiously, match and are usually black or brown. They have a basically humanoid shape, but their natural stoop, large foreheads and thick, elongated limbs give them an almost ape-like appearance. Although short compared to other giants, they are broader and thicker, with more musculature hidden beneath their layers of blubber. Hill giants eschew society and are fairly solitary. Hill giant communities tend to be only two or three family units and interbreeding with close relatives is not uncommon, exacerbating the problems with the hill giant's mental development compared to other Giantkin.   They live as uncivilized savages in the wilds, only coming near civilization to raid or steal what they need to survive. Hill giants are violent, but often not out of malice but rather because they are short tempered, easily confused and prone to taking offense at the slightest misunderstanding, especially if the feel they are being mocked. Despite this propensity, beneficent hill giants are not unknown.   Although dimwitted, hill giants can, nonetheless be quite cunning - somewhat akin to Ogre. Their schemes are never complex, but can be quite effective, especially against the unwary or overconfident.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Smarter hill giants can learn languages such as Common, Draconic, Elvish, Goblin or Orcish, but most only speak Giant and maybe a pidgin version of the Common Tongue. It is the rare hill giant indeed who speaks three languages or more.

Culture and cultural heritage

Any culture that can be ascribed to hill giants tends to revolve around games and food. Very often a combination of both. Such games include Stuff - where the goal is to see how many small living beings (halflings, kobolds and goblins are favorite targets) that the giant can stuff into their mouth without swallowing.   Hill giants that live relatively close to civilized areas have been known to try and emulate their neighbors with mixed results. Hill giants have been known to attempt treetop living to mirror a nearby elven community, resulting only in the felling of some large trees. A hill giant might set himself up as a king, demanding tribute from any he views as his subjects. Hoever, they are just as likely to forget their self-appointed rank and simply eat those that they want to serve them.

Shared customary codes and values

Hill giants subscribe to the idea that bigger is better. Smaller humanoids are seen as little more than prey to be hunted, while dragons and other larger creatures are worthy adversaries or simply to be avoided. Most of their shared values revolve around food. Their tremendous constitution means they can consume almost anything organic, and so they do. Although meat is preferred, hill giants can easily live on vegetation for extended periods.

Average technological level

Of all the giants, the hill giants are the least advanced. Partially this is due to their dull wits, but equally they have simply not needed to advance, utilizing their brute strength to survive and not desiring anything more than an abundance of food and a crude shelter from the weather. Simply put, their undeveloped emotions and limited intelligence, only the exceptional among their kind have needed anything beyond living as savage barbarians in the wilds of Valine.

Common Etiquette rules

Hill giants are natural bullies who prey on weaker creatures and make them do the work that the hill giant doesn't want to do. They are blunt and direct in expressing themselves and difficult to reason with.

Common Dress code

Hill giants tend to wear roughly stitched together animal hides and give little thought to modesty over practicality of clothes for hunting and fighting.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

A hill giant that finds themselves with an overabundance of food stores might call a Grand Feast to show off their success to other hill giants. The feast is designed to show the status of the hill giant who throws it and they will attempt to outeat any other hill giant that shows up.  Hill giants will often invite other giants to such a feast, although few will accept the extended invitation, knowing that such a display of gluttony from a hill giant is not exactly an enjoyable evening's entertainment. If another ethnicity of giant does show up, however, the hill giant host will almost inevitably attempt to eat even more which has led to many a hill giant ending a Grand Feast by literally splitting their sides through sheer overeating.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Whereas many species view symmetry as enhancing beauty, for hill giants a lack of symmetry is much more appealing. Straight teeth, neat appearance and a lack of body odor are unusual and even downright repulsive traits to a hill giant.
