Jann

Weakest of the genies, jann are the result of a corrupted soul merging with a minor elemental being while on the material plane. In the process, the soul is purified, but at the expense of the power that a jann wields compared to other genies. However, the jann does reap the benefit of being able to harness all four elements rather than just that of the elemental that the soul merged with.   They resemble paragons of humans and half-elves but stand taller than both species, most being between seven and eight feet tall. Their skin is the color of golden sand and but for the supernatural intensity of their brightly glowing eyes, they would be more frequently mistaken for the species that they resembled. They also show a markedly superior intelligence than most humans, half-elves and even elves. Jann can easily live three centuries or more.   Especially resistant to fire, jann like warmer climes and can be found in greater numbers in sandy deserts where their tough skin protects them from both the heat and irritation caused by sand. They don't mind the coarseness of sand or its rough texture getting everywhere.    The weakest jann is still substantially stronger than the majority of even the strongest of demihumans. They utilize their innate ability to shrink or enlarge either themselves or their enemies and their inherent powers of invisibility to great advantage. Like other genies they can travel to the elemental planes, but they are not immune to detrimental effects of those planes and can only tolerate being there for short times without the assistance of more powerful genies .

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

On the elemental planes, jann are typically servants or mercenaries for more powerful genies , but on the material plane they revel in being more powerful than other beings and show a great pride, repaying perceived insults with wrathful vengeance. They value their privacy and so gather in communities of other jann on remote locations, often being found in nomadic clans of around thirty, constantly on the move.

Shared customary codes and values

Within their own territories, jann are friendly and accommodating, even to strangers. Their trust, however, wanes the farther they get from the comfort and security of their homes, and their natural dislike of other kinds of humanoids comes to the fore.

Common Etiquette rules

The jann are courteous and friendly with the djinn and rever the marid with something akin to worship. They merely tolerate dao and efreet with a cool courtesy.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Though often nomadic, jann observe different seasons, marking each as connected with an element (fire for summer, earth for autumn, air for winter, water for spring). Even in climates where seasons are less distinct, or where they are marked as dry and wet rather than the four temperate seasons, the jann will mark the solstices of the hemisphere they reside in by date, sensing the changes even thousands of miles away through their connection to the core elements. Thus, jann will tend to have four semi-permanent settlements that they return to at suitable points in the year, marking their stays there with rites.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Jann resemble humans or half-elves but powerfully built and particularly attractive specimens of those species. They tend, therefore, to find all but the most beauteous of those species rather homely, even repulsive, and see beauty in their own kind, judging their beauty by their physique and a lack of imperfections such as scars or signs of aging.

Relationship Ideals

Jann are polyamorous beings, with most taking multiple spouses, creating some interesting family dynamics in jann society.  This is one of the reasons that they tend to congregate in smaller clans, which are often little more than extended family units.
