Skirting Stair
At 3,255 feet, the highest peak of the Black Quill, as well as Sandy Key , and indeed, the Inner Kapusmacks, is among Mithlerien's tallest mountains, ranking fifth. It is formed mostly of gabbro, a type of rock that is ideal for mountaineers due to how easy it is to grip.
To reach the summit of the the Skirting Stair, scrambling abilities and a sense of adventure are required. The simplest and shortest route is up a scree gully from a corrie to a gulch just below the main ridge. This location serves as the starting point for a simple climb up the well-marked north ridge to the narrow peak.
The only other ridge-based route to the summit is the south-east ridge, which is a strenuous ascent that begins with a scratched chimney; a little easier route runs immediately up a narrow gully on the east face from the top of the chimney. Other routes require advanced scrambling or rock climbing abilities.
