The Wars of Divinity

The Wars of Divinity are the name given to a series of inter- and intra-faith conflicts beginning in The Year of Doctrine (167) and lasting for around two years. Despite the best efforts of the gods to intervene amongst their clergy, the mortal worshippers clung to differences in the minutiae of the practice of worship and perceived divine goals filtered through mortal eyes. Temples reorganized, faiths split and the gods drew back from direct intervention in the face of religious doubt and a seeming determination to inflict armed conflict and forced conversion upon different populaces across Valine.

The Conflict

Prelude

The growth of permanent settlements out of tribal groups over the previous five decades led to more organized religion and the founding of temples along with the development of religious doctrine.

Battlefield

Beginning in the halls of worship, debate led to physical conflict, factions formed and, eventually, armed conflict on battlefields across Valine. Even within faiths the scale and form of the conflicts varied widely.

Outcome

Schisms in nearly all the major temples, armed conflicts that laid the foundation for scattered holy wars, militant pursuit of religious doctrines.

Aftermath

The lack of action from Gama and Eruer in the face of spiraling chaos from their worshippers led to Jopha the Verdant and Astus conceiving the ill-fated plan to create a perfect divine being to unite the peoples of Valine. With their failure ultimately creating Khydar the Unnatural, The Divine Wars are held to be the origin of The Undead Terror.

Historical Significance

Legacy

The Divine Wars were eventually abandoned in the face of obliteration by the undead hordes, but by then major religious doctrines had emerged within all of the faiths of Valine. Those doctrines have persisted to this day in nearly all of the faiths. It is, however, hard to see past the legacy of bringing undeath to Valine.
