Quartzum

Quartzum is the primary material used in the furnaces of Steam Machines. This relatively cheap combustible rock formed from the combination of strata within the mantle of Straoheim. Although pure quartz is available in Straoheim, quartzum is a composite which interrupts the formation of quartz crystals with organic macerals. Quartzum is one of the most plentiful materials available on the continent and is used as the primary fuel source.
Quartzum bears some similarity to coal in that it burns at a higher temperature than wood and is relatively stable. However, quartzum fires can reach extremely high temperatures when combusted alongside coal and care must be to keep the two substances apart as explosions have been known to happen in boiler rooms which had more than one substance.
The burning of quartzum produces a largely clear and fine mist which may be colored by other elements being present in the deposit from which the particular ore was taken. Those who work around quartzum in mining, boiler rooms, and steam machines are known to development some ailments. Humans have been working to create filtrations systems which will increase the health of those who are forced to work around the substance.
