2b. The Monastic Hut of Imeryd’s Run

Just north of Nulb, alongside the tranquil yet deceptive waters of Imeryd's Run, stands a distinct third hut amidst the fishermen dwellings. Nestled on the northern outskirts of Nulb near the serene Imeryd’s Run, home to three dedicated monks of The Order of Rao Peacekeeper of Rao. These monks are committed to the principles of peace, reason, and serenity, embodied by their deity Rao, the Mediator. This article reimagines their purpose and presence in Nulb, aligning them with the teachings of Rao as outlined in the Order of Rao.
Physical Description
  • Hut Construction: Like its neighboring structures, crafted from discarded boat timbers and thatch, the hut exudes a humble resilience, perfectly mirroring the monks' dedication to a life of simplicity and mediation.
  • Surroundings: Positioned near the river, the hut allows the monks quick access to the water, essential both for their daily needs and their spiritual practices.

Monk Background

  • The Order of the Peacekeepers of Rao: A branch of the broader Order of Rao, these monks are sent on missions to foster peace and resolve conflicts using the principles of their deity. The current residents, Zobbec, Dazle, and Harlo, were specifically sent to Nulb by Canon Hazen of Veluna to understand and mitigate the subtle disturbances affecting the region.
  • Divine Mission: They serve under the guidance of Naezoth, their senior monk, who has recently shown signs of erratic behavior, prompting a deeper spiritual investigation by his novices.
Motivation and Training
  • Spiritual Discipline: Driven by the teachings of Rao that focus on peace through understanding and diplomacy, these monks engage daily in disciplined spiritual and physical routines to strengthen their ability to mediate and resolve.
  • Quest for Harmony: Committed to uncovering the root of Naezoth’s sudden change, they balance their time between intense training and exploring the dynamics of Nulb.
"Naezoth’s erratic behavior is deeply troubling. It is a reminder that even the strongest among us can falter and that we must address such challenges with empathy and dedication."
Personality Traits
  • Empathy and Serenity: Typical of Rao’s followers, the monks exhibit a calm demeanor and a deep-rooted empathy for others, reflecting their spiritual teachings in every interaction.
  • Diligence and Discipline: They approach every task with a meticulous sense of duty, fully embodying the stoic nature of their order.

Political and Social Relationships

  • Relationship with Naezoth: Once a source of inspiration, now a concern, their bond with their master dictates much of their current plight.
  • Interactions with Nulb’s Residents: They maintain a cautious but respectful relationship with the locals, including the ruling powers led by Lady Lmag and the formidable Sir Pale Anders. Staying true to their mission of peace.
Views on Bandits and Pirates
  • Concern for Peace: The monks view the bandit and pirate presence as a significant barrier to achieving peace in Nulb, motivating their efforts to mediate and reduce tensions.
  • Philosophical Opposition: They oppose the disruption caused by these groups, seeing it as their duty to restore order and reason to the community.
Future Aspirations and Challenges
  • Restoration of Naezoth: A primary goal is to help their master regain his former wisdom and stature, believing his recovery is key to stabilizing the region.
  • Spread of Rao’s Teachings: They aim to gradually infuse Rao’s philosophy into Nulb’s cultural fabric, hoping to transform it into a beacon of serenity.

Conclusion

The monks of the Order of the Peacekeepers of Rao represent a unique fusion of martial readiness and philosophical depth. As they navigate the complexities of their mission in Nulb, they embody the teachings of Rao, striving to resolve conflicts through understanding and, when necessary, through subtle strength. Their commitment to their divine mission not only shapes their daily actions but also offers a glimmer of hope for the troubled village of Nulb.

Introductions

As the adventurers approach the riverside hut, they see a figure dressed in a flowing red robe trimmed with yellow-gold, standing tall with an air of calm authority. Beside him, two younger monks stand silently, their heads bowed in a display of respect and solemnity. The elder monk steps forward, his hands clasped in front of him, and addresses the group with a gentle, measured tone.
Zobbec: "Greetings, travelers. I am Zobbec, a servant of the Order of the Peacekeepers of Rao. These are my fellow novices," he gestures to his silent companions, "Dazle and Harlo, who have chosen to join me in quiet reflection and service. We reside here, by the grace of Rao, to mediate peace and seek understanding in the complexities of this world."
He pauses, observing the adventurers with a hopeful gaze, his expression open and inviting.
Zobbec: "We find ourselves in a time of need and uncertainty. Our mentor, Naezoth, who once guided us with wisdom and clarity, has taken a path that is... troubling. His actions and words have grown erratic, a shadow of his former self. Despite our efforts, the cause of his affliction eludes us, and we fear for his well-being—and for the impact it may have on Nulb and its people."
Zobbec's tone turns earnest, his eyes searching the adventurers' faces for signs of understanding and compassion.
Zobbec: "If your journeys allow, we seek aid in unraveling this mystery. Any insight, or even a fresh perspective, could prove invaluable. We believe in the power of collective wisdom and the strength that comes from shared endeavors. Will you join us in this quest? Your help could not only restore a cherished guide but also bring much-needed peace to this troubled land."
The monks beside him raise their heads slightly, their expressions mirroring the solemn hope in Zobbec's words. The river beside them flows quietly, a silent witness to the exchange, reflecting the seriousness and the potential of the moment.

Background of Naezoth's Affliction
Over the past two months, Naezoth, the mentor of the three novice monks from the Order of the Peacekeepers of Rao, has exhibited troubling changes in behavior. Initially sent to Nulb by Canon Hazen of Veluna to promote peace and monitor potentially destabilizing activities like the slave trade, Naezoth's mission took a dark turn. The novices, Zobbec, Dazle, and Harlo, are deeply concerned but are unaware of the true nature of his affliction. They suspect it could be a severe psychological break rather than a test of their faith.
Initial Mission and Complications
The group originally consisted of five novices under Naezoth’s tutelage. Their mission aligned with Rao's teachings of peace and understanding, which took a specific interest in the rumors of slave trading through Nulb—an activity believed to involve Naezoth’s estranged brother, Naelin, a known outlaw in the Viscounty. However, rather than aiming to disrupt the slave trade, Naezoth sought to understand and possibly locate his brother. This personal quest, however, became complicated as Naezoth started to show signs of distress, becoming unkempt, irritable, and unexpectedly aggressive.
Novices' Current Situation
With Naezoth's condition deteriorating, two of the original five novices returned to their monastery outside Verbobonc in search of guidance. The remaining three, steadfast in their loyalty, chose to stay behind in hopes of aiding their master's recovery. They are isolated, continuing their training and living off meager resources while Naezoth, having taken up a position as deputy to the constable of Nulb, has distanced himself from them and no longer visits.
Interaction with Adventurers
Should adventurers approach respectfully, the novices are prepared to share their concerns and the little they know of Nulb’s dynamics. They are candid about the challenges they face and the minimal support they receive. They express uncertainty about Naezoth’s intentions with his brother, whether it was to reconcile or confront him.
Knowledge of Nulb and Its Figures
The novices are somewhat informed about the key figures in Nulb. They know of Lady Lmag, the enchantress who rules Nulb, and her formidable enforcer, Pale, who allegedly keeps a subdued black dragon hidden within the village. They are also aware of the constable and the deputy but keep their interactions minimal to avoid complications.
Guidance for Adventurers
The novices can guide adventurers to local points of interest like the Waterside Hostel and the Boatmen’s Tavern, cautioning that many items traded there may be stolen. They hope the adventurers might shed light on Naezoth’s strange behavior or assist in reconciling the troubled monk with his duties and possibly his brother, Naelin.
“Master Naezoth ascended to his position over a year ago, and we longed to learn from him. He is well thought of in the Order of the Peacekeepers of Rao, and it was a great privilege to be chosen as his student. Our master brought us here when he heard rumor that slave trade traveled through Nulb. I do not believe it was his intention to put an end to the trafficking of slaves, but rather to research and learn what he could, for you see, it is said (and so I believe) that his brother is an outlaw in the Viscounty. An outlaw wanted for the trading of slaves.   “It is my belief that Master Naezoth wanted to find his brother, though whether he wanted to reunite or take his brother into custody I know not. But of course, none of that happened. Shortly after arriving here, something changed within the master. He became… I don’t know how to say. He became… messier. Messier, less clean, and he began to grow a beard. Very unlike him. And also… more irate and given to heated bouts of anger. Irrational anger.   “Finally, he left us here, and he no longer so much as visits, though he remains in Nulb. We are left alone, to train alone, to forage alone. To worry alone. Meanwhile, our master has moved into Nulb proper. He is deputy to the constable now, and in good standing… if such a thing is possible in a village of cutthroats and thieves.”
