Nessa Jacaranda

Nessa Jacaranda

Nessa is a 16 year-old fairy who likes pretty things, pink things, and lots of other things that don’t start with the letter “p” (and thus are not included in order to keep the amusing alliteration in the sentence). If she was from our world, we would consider her a trans girl. However, she lives in a world where people don’t assume gender based on genitals, so she sees herself as just “a girl” (and nobody holds an unhealthy obsession with what is under her skirt).   As for hobbies, Nessa plays the flute and fiddle. She likes to design and put together her own clothes, and her diary is full of little drawings of herself, her friends, and whoever is currently makes her heart beat faster (did I mention that everybody in this world is bi/pansexual by default?). She is a social butterfly, the life of the party, and the prettiest fairy in town (or so she thinks). And she is obviously the living embodiment of humility.   Her family life is pretty good too: Nessa’s mother is the High Priestess in her community, her step-father is a loving man devoted to her mother, and her younger brother is a sweet kid (though not as cute as her). All families have their tragedies, though, and in Nessa’s case it is the fact that her father was kidnapped by demons when she was a tiny toddler. He was never seen again, and presumed dead.   But if Nessa’s only drama was in the past, we wouldn’t have a plot or an interesting main character. Nessa's story (and thus the main plot of A Fairy Out of Her Tale) starts when she kills her step-father, loses her fairy powers, and is banished from all fairy communities. Now she has to start her life again in a world of shape-shifters were people speak a strange language and write in even stranger symbols.   Luckly she has a Diary where she can write about it all and get the occasional emotional support.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Nessa is generally healthy. She has no major health problems, and the last time she got seriously injured (before her banishment from Floresfada, anyway) was when she fell from a tree and broke her arm. She's not particularly fit for fairy standards, which means she can climb tress and run short distances just fine, but is not particularly strong or muscular.

Body Features

Nessa has dark skin, brown eyes, and her fairy wing used to be pink before it disappeared.

Facial Features

Nessa hates her facial hair (and body hair in general). She is already plagued by a considerable amount of facial hair growth, enough to give her a noticeable stubble when she was unable to shave for a few days in hospital.

Identifying Characteristics

Unfortunately for her, Nessa's most identifying feature is the lack of wings, which she lost along with her fairy powers when she killed her step-father. The lack of wings marks her as a sinner unworthy of other fairies, and she is forever banned from interacting with them because of it.

Physical quirks

Right-handed.

Special abilities

Nessa no longer possesses any of the powers that used to mark her as a fairy.

Apparel & Accessories

If she could, she would dye her hair purple. She likes to wear rings and colourful wristbands, as well as flowery head accessories. However, ever since being banished from Floresfada she has been too busy to buy new fashion accessories.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Nessa is the oldest child of Nelma Jacaranda, the High Priestess of Pindaiba, one of the larger fairy cities in Floresfada. She grew up in a happy, loving household, even though her father was kidnapped by demons when she was a toddler and is now presumed dead. Nessa's mother then married Morumpi Jacaranda, a loving and hard-working fairy, who then became Nessa's father figure. Nessa also has a younger brother called Oraci.   The fact that her mother is the High Priestess means Nessa grew up playing an important role in her community's religious ceremonies. She is proud of this part of her life and enjoys the spiritual and symbolic significance of it. Nessa is only slightly saddened by the fact that, because she was born with testicles instead of a uterus, she will never be able to become a High Priestess herself.   But then, of course, Nessa's life turned upside down when her step-father tried to kidnap her and send her to the demons (like her father had been). Nessa ended up killing one of the most important people in her life and lost her fairy powers and her home as a result.   Nessa fled to Daisen, the land of shape-shifters, and was taken as a refugee in their capital, Enkyo. She is now rebuilding her life in the company of a guardian angel and three other young refugees, though the demons have not given up on her, and the threat of a war looms in the horizon.

Gender Identity

Nessa has identified as a woman since she was old enough to express her own tastes. Although fairies don't particularly associate colours with gender (green is associated with motherhood, but motherhood itself is not linked to femininity in any way), Nessa was always fond of pink, purple, and healthy doses of glitter. She likes to make herself pretty and use her good looks to get literal "pretty please" favours out of people.

Sexuality

Nessa, like all fairies, is bi/pansexual. Fairies believe sex is part of bonding with friends (as well as a romantic activity), and so Nessa has already had a few experiences with other fairies her age.   As of Scene 50 of her story, she has feelings (romantic and sexual) for Lydia, her dwarf housemate who is, like her, a woman born with testicles.

Education

Nessa has to learn more Daisenian before she is allowed to finish secondary school in her new country.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Nessa used to play an important role as the child of the High Priestess in all religious ceremonies. Although her only "achievement" was to be born before her brother, this was an important part of Nessa's identity before her banishment.   She is also an accomplished musician. Nessa can play the fiddle and the flute, the two traditional fairy instruments, and is well-versed in fairy folk music.

Failures & Embarrassments

When Nessa was 7 years old, she was due to play her first concert as a flautist. She got so nervous, however, that she tried to hide behind her dress once she got on stage, lifting her skirt up to cover her face and revealing her cute underwear to the audience. The story makes everyone laugh now, but at the time it resulted in Nessa deciding she would never become embarrassed by pubic appearances again, and she worked hard to develop a more showy personality.

Mental Trauma

Killing her step-father, a man she loved and considered her main father figure.

Intellectual Characteristics

Nessa has great spatial awareness due to having grown up in a forest. She is considerably less skilled in learning languages, though (mostly because fairies are some of the most isolationists groups in the world, and tend to ignore other cultures).   Most fairies are naturally good musicians, with good musical ear and sense of rhythm. Nessa is no exception.   She has great emotional intelligence, at least for a 16 year-old. Nessa has good listening skills, understands and shows empathy for most people, and has a generally forgiving nature.

Morality & Philosophy

Killing is wrong. No exceptions.

Taboos

Killing people or animals is a taboo for fairies in general, and so is eating meat. Fairies are actually unable to digest meat, as Nessa found out by accident while in a Daisenian hospital.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Nessa used to dream about having a huge family of lovers and children, and of getting some recognition as a folk performer.   Since her banishment, however, Nessa's motivations shifted to the rather more urgent task of "learning to survive" and "keep the demons away from me". She still occasionally thinks about having a family, though those thoughts usually come with a healthy dose of self-deprecation and worry that nobody will want a murderer for a partner.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

She used to be good at making friends, but the new place, new culture, and new people of Daisen are proving to be quite a challenge for her skills. She is still considerably ignorant of the cultures that surround her new world, is thus liable for a number of faux-passes while trying to make friends.

Likes & Dislikes

She likes nature, plants, green scenery. Forests. Birds chirping in the morning. Looking out of the window and seeing the most luscious forest all around her. She doesn't like the desert, the concrete jungle that is Enkyo, with no nature anywhere in sight. She doesn't like to be confined to a place indoors (though the air in Enkyo is so polluted she is probably better off inside the house), and she doesn't like when houses are made of one single building with rooms linked by internal corridors.

History

Morumpi and Nessa met when she was still a toddler. They got on well even then, and it didn't take long for Nessa's mother to make Morumpi her main partner, and thus Nessa's step-father.   Since Nessa's biological father had been missing for years and presumed dead, Morumpi became Nessa's second parental figure while growing up. He took Nessa outside on his back when she was too sick to get out of bed, helped her with school work, and even pointed her out in the right direction as she began her sexual awakening.   Nessa adored and respected her step-father right until he turned on her and tried to take her to the demons. Why would he do that? Did he ever love her? Or was there something more sinister going on?

Wealth & Financial state

She used to be relatively wealthy because her mother held the most important position in her home city. Now that she is a refugee living in a shelter, she has only a handful of possessions in her name, and no financial independence.

Nessa is fluent in Fadalesh, her mother tongue. She is trying to learn Daisenian so she can function in Daisenian society, but it's proving harder than she expected (it might have something to do with all the funny letters and absurd grammar structures).
