Sacrosanct
A divine sanctuary, too pure to be corrupted. Or at least it once was...
At one point in history, the city of Sacrosanct was a beacon of religious purity. A sacred and fortified settlement of all that is good and holy. At it's center was to be built the largest cathedral on the continent of Veridia. A divine sanctuary that could never be corrupted. Or so they thought...
The Sacrosanct of today is a dreary and melancholy place. Dark empty streets, bleak architecture wet from an everlasting storm, and a depressed populace who seem almost deprived of any emotion. The cathedral was never finished and has fallen into disrepair. The city has become, quite literally, a shadow of its former self. The city rarely sees visitors, and those that do come don't stay for long, or disappear without a trace. The townsfolk live in fear of the night, for they believe blood-sucking creatures of the darkness roam the streets, feasting on the life of any unfortunate soul who is left out at night.
Recently, a platoon of holy knights, calling themselves The Blades of Judgement, hailing from no particular nation, arrived in Sacrosanct. They have come claiming to restore the city to its former glory, and they plan on doing so by destroying the vampire sanctuary they believe exists in the city. Little do they understand that there is more to this conspiracy than they believe...
Demographics
Majority human population, with dwarves and halflings as second and third majority.
Government
Sacrosanct is an independent city-state and is ruled by a Baron/Baroness. The Baron collects taxes and attempts to keep the populace's spirits up. It is rumored that the current Baron is actually a vampire, or that he acts as a puppet for a powerful higher vampire who resides in the city, but the validity of this statement is unknown.
Guilds and Factions
Though it's existence is known as mere rumors to the common folk, Sacrosanct is, in fact, a sanctuary for vampires. It's rare for vampires to work together, much less get along with one another, but The Family of Fangs consists of vampires related by blood to the prime vampire, and all of them know Sacrosanct is a place for them to retreat to when they must. Many vampires call it their home, and it is quite self sufficient; a constant and easily accessible supply of cattle, an impenetrable fortress of a lair, and the strength in numbers is what drives them to work together. Contrary to what some would expect, the Family of Fangs are not tyrannical rulers of the city. In fact, their existence was born out of necessity for a safe place to return to when they are threatened.
This vampire clan's existence has gone uncontested by anyone until The Blades of Judgement arrived. This group of independent, self-proclaimed holy knights of various deities came to Sacrosanct to destroy the vampire menace that plagues the town in the hopes of restoring it to it's former glory as a religious hub and a bastion for divinity. However, despite being an order, the Blades of Judgement's loosely defined morals have arguably caused more trouble for the city's citizens than the vampires.
Tourism
Only fools or monster hunters visit Sacrosanct, but when an outsider arrives, the townsfolk know. Many rarely stay more than a single night due to horrific nightmares and ominous noises. Those who linger tend to disappear for good. "Vampires got 'em," the townsfolk would say once it's clear a new arrival has gone missing. This has given the city it's mysterious allure to adventurers and monster hunters who come to try and "help" the city's vampire problem.
