Dwarven Traps

The study of scholars and bane of treasurehunters Vestria over, dwarven traps are a hallmark of ruins as well as their main sources of defence.

Access/Availability

With the high demand for researching dwarven relics and tools, studying dwarven traps are not uncommon. However, the nature and complexity of the traps often makes said study rather difficult. To get the full picture of a trap's design and workings, a scholar will need to delve into the ruins themselves. Such expeditions are regulated by both the Scholar's Guild as well as the Church of Gilderee for obvious safety reasons.   Alternatives have explorers bring back documentation of the traps along with pieces of them if possible, usually in the form of a mana crystal.

Design

Dwarven traps range from the purely mechanical to utilizing enchanted tools and mana crystals to defend their facilities. For example, a set of trapdoors set into the floor are a commonly found trap in most ruins. They are trigged by the weight of whatever unwary victim stepping on them triggering the doors to lever open. Many explorers recount the trapdoors then reseting thanks to counterweights connected to the mechanism.   A more subtle example would be the use of night mana crystals. Explorers have given account of passages lined with the stones etched into the walls. While in these passages, multiple reports detail a sudden, unbearable sense of dread and fear falling over the exploring party. It is believed that the dwarves somehow used the crystals in the wall to cast Discord as a means of sacring off intruders.   It is examples like the one above that have scholars so intrigued by dwarven traps and technology in general.

Utility

Same as with any set of traps.   Dwarven traps aim to intimidate, injure, or even kill any who dare to intrude on th remnants of their civilization.

Manufacturing

Largely unknown.   While their more simplistic traps can be understood, the more complex and magical dwarven designs are still very much a mystery to modern scholars and artificers alike.

Social Impact

The danger the traps pose have lead treasurehunters and other explorers of the ruins to be seen as either brave and dedicated scholars or fools searching just searching for gold and glory depending on whose circle the topic comes up in.

Discovery
Given dwarven craftsmenship and evident paranoia, thier traps were discovered just as soon as the first poor fool step foot into their ruins.
