Unicorn Potion

There is no such thing as a unicorn on Vreathe. There is no horse or horse-like thing that has only a single horn. There are creatures called the Kirin that are said to be similar. They are scaley drakes that vaguely have the same general shape as a horse. They have feet that resemble an eagle and they have two horns. They do not have wings but can fly due to their magic power. These creatures have a lot of magic stored in their horns. They are also native to the far western areas of the Tensen continent, many thousands of miles away from Cassel and the rest of Eastern Vreathe.

The only reason why the prople of Eastern Vreathe know about them is because Saint Nora was gifted one by the immortal Bronze emperor of Tensen at the start of the bronze age. Nora used this beast to get around Vreathe in her travels, especially later in her life. Because of this, the animals are seen as sacred in every religion in Eastern Vreathe.

In Western Vreath however, on the continent of Tensen, Kirins are a very common variety of drake. They are still sacred creatures in a way there, but they are often raised as beasts of burden. Their horns fall off once every two years and the people of those lands have more "unicorn horns" than they know what to do with.

  • Along came a company called Mercure Elixers. They buy these horns in bulk. The horns are charged with a type of aether that can be exploited by the human body. When consumed, it instantly charges all mana and greatly increases mana storage for a limited time. After the effect ends, mana storage in the body almost goes back to normal, but is permanenty increased slightly.

This is Mercure Elixers we are talking about though. All of their potions have bad side effects. In the case of thie Unicorn potion... it's cancer. Just cancer. This potion causes the Mana Lung in the rib cage to expand slightly, and long after the potion's effects end the organ stays expanded slightly. Drinking a unicorn potion occasionally will have no ill effects, but repeated abuse of the potion will cause the organ to have cancerous growths that spread and root through the body. The only cure is to remove the mana lung, which ends up disabling the person's ability to cast magic forever.
