Paying a Visit to the Master 23/4/2458 ADC

General Summary

A Plan

  • The party discussed what to do with their owl friend. They wondered if a true polymorph would still be detectable but noted that the calm emotions spell should certainly have registered as magical.
  • The party attempted to take the owl with them.
  • The party decided to go and visit the one the wolves had called the master.

Retracing Steps

  • Beerum and Eliza retraced their path to the wolf den.
  • The party was promply surrounded by wolves, demanding jerky tax.
  • Apparently, the master was either still away, or once again away, according to the wolves.
  • The wolves agreed to let the party pass, pointing them accross the stream. They mentioned that the master never bothers them on this side of the water, but the "dark ones" on the other side probably would not let the party pass.
  • Tholki was almost tossed into a rock wall.
  • Tholki found a cave, along the side of a short cliff. It was hidden by hanging moss, though it seemed that the greenery along the rest of the cliff had withered away, leaving the "disguise" looking rather suspicious.

Guard Dog

  • In the cave, the party found three sleeping wolves. The largest of these did not act as a normal animal would. It actually spoke common.
  • Eliza attempted to bargain with the guard wolf, using Beerum's jerky.
  • The wolf scoffed at this, and attempted to lure Eliza towards him.
  • The wolves attacked.
  • A fight ensued. The party was victorious, though the wolf seemed to hold out longer than they would have expected against his injuries.
  • The large wolf's dying howl was aswered by others far in the distance, notably not by the pack accross the stream.

Exploring Tunnels - Bedroom?

  • Tholki found a switch on the far side of the cave, revealing a tunnel that split into two directions.
  • Along the left tunnel, the party found a pitfall trap and then a locked wooden door. A hole was punched through the door, so that it could be opened from the other side.
  • The room contained two beds and a hammock.
  • Beside one bed was a locked metal chest, and a wooden chest with a metal lock that the party did not open due to Beerum's insistence. This bed had not been slept in the previous night, but was not particularly dusty.
  • The second bed had a magically locked book under the pillow. Beside it was a nightstand which contained qullls, ink, a few tattered maps, and a ring way in the back that had the sigil of Thurdain's King of the Spring (A fountain with an axe splitting the waters).
  • Beside the hammock was an unlocked wooden chest. Inside this chest, the party found various pieces of outdoor gear and clothing as well as two large tomes detailing the flora and fauna of the region. Some leaves and flowers were pressed inside.
  • Tholki and Beerum spent some time copying the maps, which seemed to be of the surrounded area, aboveground, with some caves marked off.

Exploring Tunnels - Renovations?

  • The party noticed that the owl was gone
  • The other passage led to a mostly empty room with two doors.
  • Behind one door was a number of crates and pallets, all filled with granite tiles, and tiling supplies.
  • The other door contained a pile of debris, and a small chute that seemed to drop down quite a ways, presumably for dumping the debris.
  • Through the room with the debris, the party was stopped by a pair of axes weilded by animated dwarven armour.
  • Beerum asked Poppy to show the armour the ring that he had previously told her not to steal and Poppy was able to command the armour and the party passed without issue. It was then notied that the armour bore a similar crest on the chest piece.
  • A room filled with more armours was found next, and these too obeyed Po-I mean Peneolope.
  • A door was built into the stone wall, without any visible knobs. The party knocked and the door opened.

Spooky Room

  • In the next room, the party found a partially tiled floor beneath a wooden table with four chairs around it. There was a brazier in each corner, though one was unlit when they entered. A series of statues, in similar condition to the statuette Beerum had found, a broken lute, and a number of ancient looking broken weapons lined the wall, as if on display. Tattered tapestries were hung on the far wall. A thick mist covered the left hand side of the room.
  • Braa attempted to tune the lute with the broken string, but felt his hand stiffen slightly. The item was later identified as the Shatteredhelm Lute of the Dwarven Bards. It seemed to have cursed Braa with a slow acting petrification.
  • Tholki went to work copying the bigger map in the center of the table.
  • One of the broken swords was identified as magical but was not picked up.
  • In the center of the room, covered by the fog, there was a large table upon which four statues, each facing outwards in diffrernt positions. These statues could be forced to turn but would turn back. There was a medium sized box in the center of the stone table, which was later identified as a coffin. The coffin was empty, save for the impression of a creature in it's velvet interior and some dirt.
  • Braa the bardalin sensed an undead accross the fog.

Just a Spider

  • Beerum walked into the fog to face the creature but was attacked by a giant spider.
  • Eliza leared that giant centipedes do not have very much AC
  • Webs are flammable .
  • The spider was killed.
  • There were two creatures wrapped in webs. One was identified as undead, and Beerum rammed a stake into it's heart. The other was a dwarf who claimed that the last thing he remembered was his group being attacked and running away into a cool dwarf guy who he followed.  He said that the trees came alive and attacked. He said that he worked for Heggalin. He was quite pale and exhausted, and fainted when the party discussed their suspicions regarding the rest of his group being turned into animals.
  • The party collected some items from the room.
  • The brazier which had been unlit when the party entered, and which Braa had lit, went out again.

Time and Place for a Nap

  • Tholki remained alone in the room with the fog and spooky coffin to copy the map.
  • The rest of the party retreated to the room with the three beds to rest.
