Draconic Pilgrimage
The Draconic Pilgrimage is a tradition in the nation of Igíos in The Sundered Isles. It was created during The Unwritten Age by the ruling emperor or empress of Igíos at the time. At that period of time dragons soared through the sky above the single island continent of Igíos and the people of the continent and the dragons were in a endless competition of strength. This lead to a popular culture of dragon hunters in the nation as well as a tremendous amount of respect for the creatures.
After discovering how the goddess Chimaera - Scourge of Primordials / Empress of Monsters ascended to divinity after slaying enough Primordials , the ruling emperor/empress became entranced with the idea of capturing the power of the primordial dragon. They began hiring dragon hunters to scour Vylderaine looking for the primordial dragon. In the meantime, they had their court mages working around the clock to try and devise a ritual to simulate the power transferring effects that occur when a primordial is slain. It is unknown whether or not their attempts were successful or not, but if so, then the information has been kept a secret and passed down from one ruler of Igíos to the next.
Nowadays dragons are much more rare as they have spread out around the world or been slain by dragon hunters, however the hunt for the primordial dragon still persists. It is illegal for a dragon hunter of Igíos to slay a dragon any younger than ancient unless their lives are in danger, this is because they are to try and find out as much information about the primordial dragon as they can from any dragon they find and then slay the ancient dragon and claim its power using the ritual that Igíos claims to have successfully created.
When a new dragon younger than ancient is discovered, they are closely monitored and their likeness is added to draconic shrines all around Igíos. As the years pass they earn their own followers and fanbase until such a day when the dragon becomes ancient and an individual or team of dragon hunters are chosen to become Imperial Dragon Hunters. These Imperial Dragon Hunters are the only ones permitted to hunt the specific ancient dragons discovered and whichever Imperial Dragon Hunter deals the killing blow on the dragon is hailed a hero and is expected to become one of the Saints of Drákagon.
If the ruling emperor/empress is coming to the end of their life and the primordial dragon has not yet been found and slain, as is true to this day, then a national celebration occurs to celebrate the life of the ruler as the heir to the throne conducts the ritual to absorb the power of their predecessor. While many nations outside of Igíos see this as a rather morbid affair, the nation views it as a celebration of succession and of a life well lived. Whether the rituals that are conducted through the Draconic Pilgrimage actually work is still a matter of debate, but the rulers and residents of Igíos seem to believe it works.
