The Five Brothers of Vexan

The Five Brothers of Vexan, also called the Northlanders by foreigners, is the name for the family of human ethnic groups native to the Kingdom of Vexan. They are an old collection of people, together the direct heirs of the northern branch of the Melisternian Ceasterwyrhta, one of the two mighty people that this old empire consisted off.

The 5 Brothers of Vexan

Podoalmeri

The largest in population, the Podoalmeri are a Vexan people that occupy the so called Vexan Lowlands, a vast stretch of land in the middle of the kingdom that connect the north Prabaiian lowlands to the sea, a rich traders culture famous for their wealth and infamous for their "curious" taste in food.

Rocui

The most politically mighty of all the Vexan peoples, the Rocui mostly live in Țara Tronului, the Thronelands Peninsula, living as fishermen, traders and capable bureaucrats in the political machine of the Kingdom. The royal dynasty are also from this tribe and their language, commonly known as High Vexan, has been accepted as the standard for official business and trade throughout the realm.

Bataqui

Located in the western parts of Vexan as well in the far south-east, the Bataqui are a rough people used to fishing, lumberwork and excellent craftsmanship. They are often seen as the most technically gifted of the Vexan peoples.

Laikka

Although some are located in the south-western parts of Vexan, most live on the other side of the Abraz Mountains as their own independent nation. They are a rugged and isolated mountain people, who have adopted the tongue of their Giantkin neighbours.

Bočetti

Read more on the Bočetti here.

Located in the eastern lakelands that bears their name, the Bočetti are a people whose history is less connected to the horse lords of Prabai and more to the dwarves of Urunkhar. They are fierce warriors, although centuries of civil strive has resulted in their people turning those warriors most often of all against themselves. This has led to the Bočetti only being a recognised people group outside of the land of Bočechnia itself, with the Bočetti regarding themselves only as one of many sub-ethnicities.

History

The Vexan people have for many centuries been living along the northern coasts of West-Argo, mostly located on and around the peninsula they call Țara Tronului, or the Thronelands. In fact, the Vexans peoples have been calling this their home since the latter half of the 3rd century AAA. Back then, the still somewhat new Empire of Melistern was split between two major ethnicities, born as sub-cultures within the same Arteri Human ethnicity, the semi-nomadic Āngenġan and the city building Ceasterwyrhta, the latter of which sprouted the Wexan tribes, by the Melisternians called the Northlanders.

The early years of the Vexan people consisted of prosperous trade with the gnomes of Gotkolh, with them like many other Vexans taking over many of their customs. To the point of the coastlanders being alienated by the Melisternian homeland, seeing them over the course of the 4th century AAA more and more as foreigners.

With the fall of the Melisternian Empire in the 460's AAA, the Vexan lands fell apart into many different tribal holdings. This time, between the fall of Melistern and the rise of Prabai 200 years after that is considered the Vexan warlord era. The Northfolk were split up between about a dozen different warlord-led states, some of which culturally drifted away from the former mainstream more and more over the course of the 2 centuries, each being influenced by other hegemons in the area. In the West, the Holzmarkers and Laikka formed their own nations. In the north, the Rocui built a rich and developed nation in the tip of the Thronelands. In the East, the Podoalmeri and their united city of Albero & Fiamme, as well as the Bataqui in the city of Vierban and the city of Danpieu, all grew to became prosperous yet relatively small states.

With the rise of the Empire of Prabai at the start of the Second Age of the Man, one by one the warlord states of the North fell to Prabaiian rule. For a little more then a millennium, the Vexans would bow to the Prabaiian imperial crown. Yet while this time is generally looked back as a time of oppression and hardship, it was not a static and stable time, Although militairy order was controlled by the Emperor, the many different nationalities in the enormous bureaucratic machine that was the Empire led to many internal problems over the many years. The centuries birthed many uprisings in the northern states, nearly all were crushed down brutally in the end, although a notable few of them managed to hold on for many years, with the people of Holzmark being the only ones to actually rip themselves loose from the Prabaiian yoke in the 3rd century AZ.
