Verdant

Capital city of the Spiney Isles. (Verdant, Mydent, Myfar and Sybar)
A rich and successful Barony which often rivals Westfal City for power in the region. It is located on the largest island in the Spineys and its population includes a large proportion of High Elves. Unique for the empire this City State is ruled by a council of elders who share the Barony's voting rights in the Imperial Council.
Has a relatively progressive culture for The Empire and is a Meritocracy ruled by a council of 10 elders, who take it in turns to hold the Title of Count. Home city of Malice
A crowded and claustrophobic city with many inhabitants lacking common sense, living in the Taboo areas of the city itself. This may explain why so many people seem at odds with each other - often coming to blows. Still there are redeeming features, a good canal system provides easy and peaceful ways to traverse the city and is all linked to the sea harbour. There is easy unfettered access to the countryside through the hills the city backs onto and there is even a hidden grotto to find, adding true peace and respite from the stone clamour of the city.
— Miriks guide to the Empire: Verdant
Although decision making in the region is taken by the elders, the government is constitutional led by the Prince and Princess who hold largely ceremonial powers.   The Prince and Princess of Verdant are Filipa D'Arise and Albert D'Arise are the noble and well respected Fillipa is a Dark Elf, and Albert is a Human. They married at a young age, and together manage a very profitable shipping company.   Relations with House Lucia are very poor, and there have been numerous trade wars, and actual wars between Lucia and Verdant. Current relations are extremely tense and on the edge of breaking into conflict.   Because of its large port, it has a notably large concentration of followers of Avandra. Although this is still not recognised by the state as an official religion here. This college boasts the might Axiom among its alumni, although in recent years he has fallen from grace somewhat. The college is known to specialise transformational and illusionary magics. Some feel that its inclusion of a bardic department in recent years is a sign of its decline.   Other notable places of interest include the Living Lights theatre. The harbour often hosts dolphin racing in the summer. The Memoriam is a centre for elven knowledge and research, focussing on magical knowledge and elven history.   The Riddles: Congested and chaotic slumlike area of the city. Actually very clean and ordered, and comparatively safe compared to other cities. Very confusing to navigate through, but full of interesting shops and people   The Docks: A sleazy inn can be found here: The Serpent's Kiss is a good place to find all kind of low lifes, as well as ships captains drowning their sorrows.   Tablov: Nobles district and home to several trading company offices.   High Mount: On the southern side of The Narrows, the district containing the Cathedral of St Hubert, government offices and the D'Arise family home and offices.   Verdax Palace is outside the city, further up the mountain. Its beautiful form and multitude of minarets are renowned around the world.   The Harlequins: Famous for their multicoloured uniforms and dynamic heraldry, this elite unit of knights is the personal guard of Marissa D'arise. The Harlequins bear huge greatswords.   The White Guard: The elite unit charged with guarding the Council of Elders.       Trade: As well as its large trading economy with the empire, The Northern Realms and the rest of the world, Verdant also has a strong fishing industry. The Jewelers guild has world reknown and some of the finest jewel smiths in the world reside in the city.       Factions   The Salty Dogs: A mercenary guild that specializes in maritime activities. Crew for hire, protection of merchant vessels, dock security, etc. You can find a Salty Dogs guildhall in any city with a port, but their main base is in Verdant.
