Latchby

Latchby is a village ostensibly in Talla's territory, but the village only exists because of Mistguard Castle. It is a medium-sized village of about 60 standing structures, each kept in hearty condition. It is named after the first family to set down a permanent residence to farm the nearby plains.   The village was settled within the last year, and the population density remains somewhat sparse. There are enough residents to handle the tasks that need doing, but it can be difficult at times. Those who live here have enough to live modest lives. Their wealth mainly comes from the grain crops they grow in the area. Much of it is used to make bread and ale, both of which are considered exceptional for such a small settlement. The remaining crops are sold off to the few merchants who prize them.   The ethnic composition falls along a roughly normal distribution: humans make up about half the residents, and dwarves make up about one fourth. Latchbians are a bit standoffish with outsiders, but those who prove to be of value can find fast friends in the village.   Residents elect a single leader to direct village affairs, including the appointment of a sheriff to maintain order. Villagers may assist with law enforcement if absolutely necessary, but they prefer to avoid taking a firm stance. Crime is uncommon and is typically the result of too much ale. All villagers come together in the gathering hall each tenday to discuss issues and solve problems.   A modest oratory is built to Chauntea, the goddess of agriculture. The following is quite fervent; farmers openly speak about their faith and the importance of Chauntea's blessing on their crops. Some villagers whisper about the worship of another deity, but nothing is apparent or disrupts day-to-day life.   In addition to the farmhouses, a smithy of adequate skill has set up a shop in town. He spends most of his time on farming implements.   Hobart Shaw recently opened the Gardener and the Hearth, a tavern/inn catering to travelers and locals alike.
