Butterbank

Originally founded as a caravan stop for those that are traveling south in the Garden Expanse, Butterbank quickly grew into a small city and continues to be one of Mistfen Mires overland gateways to the south. Inside the short crumbling walls of Butterbank, the permanent population lives in solid structures, but outside the walls sprawls a thriving population of traders from all over Mistfen Mire. Because of the hundreds of caravans that camp outside her walls, the population of Butterbank can seasonally triple, especially after the first melt and toward the end of summer. With no natural barriers along her borders, and with no access to rivers or the sea, Butterbank relies on the trader caravans for survival. The Lower Rendlea population here is more open to travelers and outsiders alike than anywhere else in the Mire.   The small city is constructed of drab walnut houses, most two and three stories. The city is laid out in an incoherent jumble, as Butterbank was never supposed to be a town of any sort. The Merchant Princes of Westermarrow control the commerce to a degree in the city, but have little power over the people who live there. During the winter, when the hills are frozen over and the roads are nearly impassable, is when the bandits come down from the hills to take refuge in the city. This causes extreme strain with the permanent population, as the crime rate nearly quadruples. A small town council resides over Butterbank, but the position is little more than ceremonial.
