New Erika

The colonists fled the danger that threatened their existence on the island of Landing, and made their way east, to a new continent. It was a huge land of such plenty and beauty, they named it New Erika, after the Erika of an old Terran myth: a land where gold grew from the ground and the rivers flowed with milk and honey, and people escaped persecution to live their lives in freedom.

Geography

The Northern Wastes and the Pole

New Erika stretches all the way to the North Pole of Zarqon, encompassing it with a sheet of permanent ice. It's unknown how much land rests under the ice sheet at the northernmost tip of the continent.   South of the pole is land known as the Northern Wastes. There are ruins in this area that are so old, even the Magi do not know who they are from. At the border between the wastes and the Northern Temperate Belt rests the lands of the Magi.

The Northern Temperate Belt

Below the Northern Wastes is the Northern Temperate Belt of New Erika. Most of it is forest. The southern (bottom) portion of it contains the countries of Athering and Nucalif.   The Temperate Belt is bisected by a mountain range called the Blood Mountains. Through this range runs the Blood River, which starts at the Magisea in the Magilands. The Blood River runs through the city of Atherton, where it turns into the Three Sisters and heads to the Zameera Sea.

The Equatorial Desert

Across the Equator of New Erika was a partial desert, peppered with oases and spots of jungle. On the western edge of the desert was a valley with a small rainforest in it, but the rest of the area was arid. After colonization by the ancestors of the people of Ixtepan, the desert was transformed into lush jungle, strong rivers flowing from the center of the continent to the sea and to the land below. After the Theft of the Star, the land returned to desert for several thousand years, but the oases and spots of jungle that had used to pepper it were gone, and it was even more arid, if possible.

The Southern Temperate Belt

Below the tropic-boundary of the equatorial desert is the southern temperate belt. Originally with a few small rivers started by springs, after the colonization of Ixtepan the land became known as the Riverlands. A mountain range runs down the western side from north to south, and the center of this part of the continent was filled with a dense, old-growth forest. Underneath this part of the continent were sea-caves, filled with the precious mineral known as heksensteen.   After colonization by the ancestors of the people of Velevieren, the sea caves were mined ruthlessly for heksensteen, expanding the reach of the caves, making them into gigantic caverns. The southern tip of the continent was held above the ocean by long, spindly bits of rock.
