Athering

Structure

Queen

Ruler of the country as mandated by the Goddesses Themselves. The Queen is the leader of Athering and commander of her armies. Whether or not she is also the leader of the Aradian Order changes throughout the years; as of 4021 and the time of Queen Yarrow there is separation between church and state.   The Queen of Athering takes the Sceptre at age 30. If her mother dies before she is an adult (age 17-21, depending on certain factors), a Regent may rule until the heir feels ready to take her rightful place.

Consort

The Consort is the Queen's partner and father of her children (the heirs). While the Queen rules the country, he tends to running the palace. If a Queen dies before her heir is the age of majority, her Consort may rule as Regent until the heir reaches adulthood. The Consort may never rule in his own right.

The Council

An arrangement of nobles from lesser houses whose purpose is to act as the Queen's cabinet. They advise her and rein her in, if necessary or possible. While the Queen is technically the absolute power in Athering, the Council does have some power to balance out hers, so a wise Queen will work with them, not against them.   There are several Councils throughout Athering, one for each town. The one in Atherton works with the Queen. Each Council is made up of members of the lesser nobility; some noble houses have representation in each Council across the country, others, only one.

Eorl

The leader of any coastal city, excepting Nucalif. Currently the only coastal city is Harbourtown, though at different times in Athering's history there have been more.

Duchess or Lady

Historically there was a difference between the size of the towns Duchesses or Ladies in Athering ruled over, but as time has gone on populations have fluctuated but titles have remained.

Mitérarch & Archon

A Mitérarch is the ruler of one of the Lesser Nobility houses whose members comprise the country's Councils, and the Archon is her male consort.
Mitérarchs are always female. In the rare occasion that a male heir takes over his family, he will be an Archon, not a Mitérarch, and while his powers over his own family will be the same as a Mitérarch's, his opinion is not held in as high esteem by the rest of the families or, usually, the Queen.
It's generally thought that an Archon in charge of a family is just a seat-warmer until the next Mitérarch comes along.
