Personal history
Asad was born to a smithing family in Sunmire. His hometown was not particularly large or important on its own, but it was very near to the city of Pheswell which holds the Colosseum of Mages. The Colosseum is a magic only battle arena where magic users from all over Pheswell can come to test their skills. Some people even become career combatants and make their living fighting in the Colosseum and vie to become the Champion of the Colosseum.
When Asad's family had a particularly prosperous year they would take a trip into the city and spend a day or two at the Colosseum. Young Asad fell in love with it. The dangerous and dramatic flashes of magic, the adrenaline of the fight, and the roar of the crowd all entranced the young boy and that excitement never faded as he aged. At first his parents were hesitant to allow their child to learn magic for the purposes of becoming a gladiator at the Colosseum, but it soon became clear that magic surged in Asad's blood and his affinity for fire was unsurpassed even among other fire genasi and his parents allowed him to travel to the city to be trained.
After coming of age and completing his training Asad went immediately to the Colosseum to audition to become a gladiator. He had the poor luck to be matched against a practitioner of water and storm magics for his first fight and inevitably lost the bout, but the judges were impressed enough by his display of magic and how long he lasted with the odds so weighed against him that he was granted a second fight. This time, against a more fairly matched opponent Asad came out on top and secured his place as one of the newest gladiators.
Over the next several years Asad worked his way up the ranks and gained himself a decent following amongst the crowds of the Colosseum. He was well liked for his especially flashy displays and they way he played to the crowd. One of the defining moments of his career was when Asad once again faced the water and storm mage from his audition and this time, despite his major disadvantage, Asad emerged victorious. This battle gained him his battle name, The Rising Phoenix.
At the age of 24 Asad had risen high enough in the Colosseum and gained enough of a following that he was ready to challenge the reigning Champion, a human named Arturo Carreiro or The Crimson Panther. Both Asad and Arturo were masters of fire magic and their bout was one of the most watched in the Colosseum's recent history. In the end Asad pulled out a narrow victory and was declared the new Champion of the Colosseum. Asad was elated, he had achieved his boyhood dream.
This lasted only a few hours. Not long after Asad's victory Arturo publicly accused him of cheating and brought forth evidence and witnesses to back up his claims. Asad denied these accusations, for he had not cheated, but it was his word against Arturo's and Arturo had come prepared. With nothing to back up his innocence or refute Arturo's claims Asad was stripped of his title, publicly shamed, and banished from the Colosseum. He has since been working as a mercenary and adventurer for hire, still under his battle name The Rising Phoenix.

Religious Views
Fire genasi have an almost religious relationship with fire and flames and thus tend to worship no particular god. One fire genasi has been quoted on the subject:
"My people tend not to be particularly religious in the traditional sense, though I know most would expect fire genasi to be partial to some god of fire, but one cannot truly be the god of fire if their aim is control. They are mere pretenders. Fire cannot be controlled, it can be temporarily harnessed or worked with, but never controlled. To truly understand fire one must understand it's nature. Fire is death and life. Destruction and creation. It is the greatest contradiction, true chaos. To watch the flames, to call upon their power and know that you are the one who freed them into the world, and to be even temporarily a part of that chaos can be a nearly transcendent experience. I imagine it might be akin to what traditionally religious people feel upon hearing their god. But for us there can be no greater goal, no greater joy than to be like the flames and to feel them burning in and around you."
Social Aptitude
Asad is good with people and quite skilled at working the crowd. It was one of the reasons he was so popular during his time at the Colosseum.
