Ilvarus was the only survivor after the wood elf tribe he was a part of was wiped out by a group of marauders. He was then found by a wandering ranger who took him under his wing and taught him how to survive in the wilderness.

Ilvarus's small tribe of wood elves in Neverwinter Wood was wiped out by a group of marauders. He was later taken in by a passing ranger who trained him to survive and hunt in the wilds. Ilvarus and his master befriended the people of Phandalin but eventually got work as hunters in Neverewinter. Ilvarus's master took a quest without him and never returned. Ilvarus spent some time as a lone hunter but eventually decided to return to Phandalin where he most felt at home. He then moved in with the Alderleaf family.
