Justice Never Dies

by Aaron Sharpe

I always tell my daughter, Sarah, that Justice never dies if we keep fighting for it. But for months after Destroyer took over, I only ranted about his antics. I didn’t really fight for justice.

In my normal fashion, I made some inflammatory posts on social media and even some comments in the boardroom among my leadership team - which were quickly followed by government lawsuits and negotiated settlements that included my social media accounts being monitored by the Xplore Corp legal team.

According to my attorneys, it was no longer “acceptable” that Corporations would criticize Destroyer in public...but my skin crawled every time I heard about his antics. The “leaders” he put in place were crooked villains. And though money still worked under this regime — like it always has — the rules had changed. Privacy and freedom are only an illusion...maybe they always were...?

Back to the point. It was during a conversation with Sarah three years ago that I realized how I could join the fight...that I would fight, even. I would use my resources to oppose Destroyer and his villain cronies. Jamie helped, too. And there were others sympathetic to the cause, for sure.

Back to the point, again. Sarah and I were dreaming together about the future of space, questioning if space exploration would continue under Destroyer’s regime...and it didn’t seem possible that he’d allow it to continue privately funded. Though Xplore Corp has government contracts - he’d surely move to take over most industries with expansion/exploration ties.

So I decided to secretly join Xplore’s next orbit mission and launch as many encrypted communications and GPS satellites as I could, anticipating that Destroyer would control the SATCOMs soon. But that plan came to an explosive end when the “Runeforce”, as I call it, channeled through the spacecraft — and into me, disabling the navigation controls from the capsule and eventually causing the spacecraft to plummet back to earth.

When I awoke hours after the explosion and the spacecraft cratering into the ground, my clothes had burned, my hair was gone, and deep blue “runes” were etched all over my body with bright gold lines radiating all around. I was healing. The runes were healing me?? I fainted. When I awoke the second time, Jamie was there. She helped smooth over things with the media. She planted the explanatory story about a malfunction and made sure no one would know I was involved. I still wonder how she did it...but no one ever connected the dots.

But from that day forward, the Runeforce was part of my plan to fight back. Though I couldn’t risk another secret space mission, I went back to work developing a method to secure private communications - but now I’d use that plan for the superheroes, since that is what I intended to become.

One fight for justice at a time.
