It had been roughly a week since the warehouse explosion — and in comparison, the quiet in Millennium City was beginning to feel abnormal.
Not one to waste an opportunity, I began making daily trips to Flat Rock to investigate the XPlore plane more thoroughly. Though I could’ve portaled to the location more conveniently, I wanted Jamie’s help on this project — and I didn’t know how to talk with Jamie about my connection to the plane’s blue glow...I was hoping she’d figure it out as we worked together on the plane.
It could not be denied that the plane was ‘repairing’ itself, very slowly. Though I couldn’t logically or technically explain it, I just knew that my powers had caused it to begin healing.
Early in the afternoon, Socrates’ voice came over the comm-system with a request to provide urgent assistance at the Millennium City University. I didn’t have time to explain to Jamie what I was about to do...but I only told her to “have Jeremy take you back to town...I need to take care of something urgent. And I need you to trust me.”
Jamie smiled lightly as I quickly pulled up the MCU commons using Google Earth on my mobile phone. With that image in my mind, and the runes on my body glowing brightly, I opened a portal to the university and stepped through it. As the portal was closing, Jamie spoke quickly,
“Be careful Sharpe. This is going to change everything...”
The scene at the university was chaotic. People were screaming and running away from the main building. And my appearance in the common area seemed to create even more panic for some. But they kept running away from the building.
I could hear blaster fire and rumbling nearby, so I portaled closer to the sound. As the cosmic energy from my portal cleared, I could see a giant metal creature lumbering through the courtyard, carrying Maximum Resistance tightly gripped in his enormous hand. There was another hero further down the courtyard, fighting against agents with blasters.
The giant metal creature was speaking rapidly, spouting random facts about people and places; saying aloud the names of our team and their private details.
Maximum Resistance teleported away from the monster, who had identified himself as “Algorithm”.
Sandcrab also attempted to talk with the creature, but he was also grabbed and thrown into the nearby building, unharmed. Algorithm turned toward me next and I dove for cover, but he moved too quickly for me.
Now firmly in his grasp, Algorithm began speaking facts about me — saying my name aloud, referencing facts of XPlore Corp, and then listing the controversies about me and the company. It was like he was citing every publicly available news source, back-page blog, and social media post ever written.
In the next moment, Algorithm raised me into the air to deflect a bright flash which resonated onto my face. With that, everything went dark around me — I could see and hear nothing...it was like a void or a black hole.
After a moment of the persistent oblivion, I began to fear the worst...so I concentrated on the Sharpe Mansion Vault. I felt the typical sensation of portaling, but it was a few seconds before the oblivion subsided and I could see and hear again.
I portaled back to the university but the creature was gone, with only a pile of metal parts in the parking lot where he once stood. The team was still there recovering some of the debris, so I helped them quickly. With not much time before the authorities would arrive, I portaled to Homestead, loaded down with metal equipment that had once formed the “Algorithm”.
