A Vision of the Past?

by Aaron Sharpe

Even with the increased frequency of attacks from Gigaton and the NAGA forces, Runeforce took some days away from Homestead and maintained his human appearance as Aaron Sharpe so that he could talk with his daughter, Sarah.

She had nearly been captured by a NAGA raid. And Aaron had only just noticed her voice ringing out on the DarkR Web open-channel…one voice among many resistance units across the continent under attack from Elite NAGA forces.

He had saved her. While the New Champions took on the elite forces and even Destroids, Runeforce portaled into their building and quickly found Sarah and several of her compatriots. Within moments, he portaled them to safety. But she had nearly been killed.

Sarah was clearly no longer ‘innocent’. After several days of conversations, he learned that she had formed her own militia, secretly obtaining weapons and paying bribes using her trust funds to stay off of Dr. Destroyer’s radar. Even as impressive as this was, Aaron couldn’t tell her about the runeforce. Or about Jamie. It would just be too dangerous for her.

Even though she could clearly defend herself, Aaron worried about Sarah. While sleep was no longer necessary, Runeforce would periodically enter trances to clear his mind…and to compartmentalize his worries. But one day, his trancelike state was interrupted by a visit from Jamie.

When Jamie entered the room, Runeforce still in a trance, cosmic energy filled the room and surrounded them. His worries had triggered a series of emotional memories from Oqthcalia that had never before been known to him.

In his distress, Runeforce had ‘remembered’ a turbulent period in Oqthcalian history. Only days before the explosion of Soal, there was a celebration of three heroes from what had been called “The Commission Force”. On a podium, the heroes stood and waved to crowds of Oqthcalians. They had recently recovered countless energy pods — pods which had been secretly withheld from the common people of the planet by unknown forces.

The memory brought Runeforce peace and he smiled.

Jamie spoke loudly, “AARON! SNAP OUT OF IT!”

Her voice jarred him out of the trance. As his vision cleared, he could blearily see three humanoid forms standing in the room: one bright orange and wearing the crest of the Temple of the Kazars. Another with bulky armor covering his entire body. Then a third figure carrying a blaster and what looked like a time-device.

Jamie asked incredulously, “Who are these people?”

And as she spoke those words, they disappeared.
