Opal had met Daran Edermath at the beginning of her time in Phandalin. He is the owner of the Edermath apple orchard on the outskirts of Phandalin. Through their discussions she finds out he was once an adventurer of great renowned. He traveled with The Order of the Iron Gauntlet for many years around the Dragon Coast before settling down in Phandalin after an incident he is reluctant to mention.
Opal was originally flustered by the handsome elf as she was expecting the farmer to be an elderly man. Instead she saw a fit, silver-haired half-elf chopping wood in the high, midday sun. She is also unsure of how to react to his kindness, helpfulness and genuinely good nature, as she has been more accustomed to poor treatment most of her life. On the oddest of occasion she had received some compliments from him and even delved slightly into flirtation territory which only serves to embarrass and confuse the tiefling more.
Upon arriving back from slaying the Black Spider, Daran reveals he is a member of the Order of the Gauntlet, a devout and vigilant group that seeks to protect others from the depredations of evildoers. The order is always vigilant, ready to smite evil, enforce justice, and enact retribution against any who try to subjugate or harm others. Though he is no longer active in the order, he urges both Opal to join as he believes she exemplifes all the virtues of the order, such as honor and vigilance.
Opal, honored by the offer, agrees to one day take him up on it.
