Kitchens

by Eethyl Benzoin

Eethyl ran his hands along the edge of the cutting block counter top admiring the girth of the aged hardwood. It could use a new coat of the three part rosin gloss Walt used to make for the furniture in the burrow. He would have to set harvesting back up outside the walls to the west and collect for a while. The furnace rivalled that of the burrow. His eyes scanned the room, taking in the approximate storage and counter space. It was disproportionate to the comfortable living space on the other side, far more than even a wealthy residence of this size would need. Perhaps a living was made from this room that provided for the costs of the household? The furnishings told of some success if that was the case. He sighed and breathed in the smells of garlic, onion shoots, and spices; remembering Nina dicing efficiently at the counter. The grinding rumble of a stone cap being removed reverberated from within his core and through his bones. Memory threatened to climb from within, beautiful but also threatening to pull the mind down with it. Shaking his head he opened his eyes again and set the piece right again.
"It's nice Sila. Even if for such a short time." Threats outside the broken walls of this place threatened to wash these vestiges of freedom into sea of swords that opened as a toothy maw to the east. And while it felt like the burrow...it remained empty. He cringed, listening carefully to the voices of the others as they explored the bedrooms through the halls. They were fine folk...but he missed the feeling of being surrounded by cathodic spirits that hummed in harmony without word or pretense. The pearl was pulled from a pocket and he ran his fingers over the smoothness. "Well, lets get you back again my friend." the gnome mumbled. "We better get some more mandrake planted and the half buckets as well. Time to work Gwaur. I'll be back shortly with tools." "grawllpftftummmgmm" the creature replied as it curled up next to the fireplace and lay down to wait. Eethyl placed the necklace under a hand towel on the counter and with a puff of mist was gone again.
