Bio: Born as the second son of the Lord Steward of Affray, Darius was never one to be found with his nose in a book. Trained from a young age in hand-to-hand combat and archery, a military career seemed like an obvious choice, particularly after he failed the famously tough Imperial Bureaucracy exams, to the surprise of no-one except perhaps his father. After several failed career attempts, it was during a night of heavy drinking that Darius finally took the plunge and thus he woke up that next morning with a splitting headache and a stamped enlistment form for the Imperial Guard of Vesper. The next few years were ones of living in barracks, discipline and routine, but Darius quickly found himself becoming bored and restrained by the lifestyle. Not willing to wait until he qualified to be an officer and gained more freedom, he instead used his family connections to obtain a formal discharge and went out to seek his fortune elsewhere.
As a mercenary, things for Darius went from bad to worse. Though he appreciated the freedom of his new life, over time the company he kept became coarser, the jobs more questionable and the volume of intoxicating substances he took grew and grew. It was only when he took an arrow in the shoulder and ended up being nursed back to health by the lysofar Sophia Hawthorn that he realised just how his life had spiralled out of control. The next year, he and Sophia were married and, the disapproval of his father aside, seemed set to start a new life of family bliss. His wish was not to be, however, when Sophia died in childbirth that spring and Darius was left caring for their newborn son, Alfonso, alone. After a rocky few months, Darius came to accept his fate and focused all his energy on raising the half-lysofar, half-human child, giving Alfonso the love he never felt he had received from his own father. It was shortly after the youngster had turned three-and-a-half that Nexus would pluck the pair out of their world, changing their lives forever.
