Las Vegas Nevada worked for a casino or two in "Sin City", though only the ones owned by the mafia. They say all of the city is owned by such people, but only Vegas really knows for sure, and he won't talk. It's part of how he survived the zombie apocalypse.
When the virus struck, he was on "vacation", halfway across The United States of America. As Nevada tried to get back to Las Vegas, he saw a group of survivors using grenades and a surfboard against a hoard, and never one to shy away from shooting someone in the face, back, spine, legs, and stomach, he joined the fray to stop the attacking undead.
The "protection money" trade is not a job one can work alone, and the skills he acquired through his work experience helped him survive even longer than the fact that he worked for people that shouldn't be made angry, who work and live in the middle of a huge and empty desert with deep and soft regolith.
Las Vegas and Darius met when Darius and Alfonso were looting candy bars, granola bars, and bags of potato chips from a convenience store. As they were taking things off the shelves and storing their goods in their shared bracer, the little bell over the door chimed. Alfonso was the first to see Las Vegas walk in, submachine gun in hand and high-thread count white suit donned. He looked down at the boy, who looked up at him wide-eyed and silent. He and Darius met less than a second later.
