Chapter 10: May the 26th

General Summary

Excerpts from an irrationally encoded journal:

Right-o! Memo to me: despite the bite marks beneath his beard, NOT VAMPYRS!
Alas, it meant that the poor chaps, Szoldar and Yevgeni had to be done in. No witnesses and all that!
What manner of creature must that half-pint be, I wonder. I was too late to save you, my boy - could it be that someone was quick enough to save him? I venture to think that a quick enough death might stop a creature from turning, but to yet come back... by what means? It eludes me. I will keep my eye on these 'Guardians'.
Curiously, these interlopers are encourable! Not more than an evening past springing my trap did the Guardians venture to the Arasek Stockyard and advocate for the public service of the anarchist band Dissonant Lyric. I admit that the rabble rousers escaped even my attention. Perhaps a band of bards might make a better army against the Devil than these confounding Keepers of the Feather. I had hoped to have learned of their operation in my guise at the Blue Water Inn, but their works remain to me an enigma...
The Guardians found my wagon, of course - no going back there. While they retired at the Inn for the night, I traveled back to Khazan's Tower and pish-posh-pash there remains no more intact notes or journals for these adventurers to track me with. Yan may well be able to speak, but I suppose I couldn't resist leaving but a single bread crumb - it does keep things a tad more interesting!
Early the next morning, Ezmerelda returned, though I could not reach out to her without exposing myself - she'd understand. She came with a man I can only assume must be the very Emil she had been hoping to free from the castle's dungeon, but they were not alone. Werewolves. No match for my prized apprentice, but I was not able to track them as they fled to the west - likely to Krezk.
As I had hoped, much later into the morning, the Guardians themselves made an appearance, in a Wizards of Wines wagon of all things - traveling in subtlty must not be their strong suit! The fools trigger just about every trap they could find, the lightning barrier, the Blue Dragon illusion, and Ezme's wagon lock! Though they did find Yan and spoke with him. I must assume they intended for me to find them, for they seemed to retreat into the tower and wait for a number of hours before finally leaving - taking the enchanted armor with them.
I suppose there's no mystery as to where they are of to, still I may keep my distance for now. Though they don't seem to be in league with the Dreadlord, they most certainly seem to be dangerous.
