Kingdom of Refon

Ref: Mólbrikazía
The Kingdom of Refon is one of the successor states of the old dwarven civilzation of Katargysía, along with Dalindren and Fazeron. Of those three, it's the only one that's fully independent, with the dwarves of Dalindren and Fazeron being subjects of the Kingdom of Faron.

International relations

The kings of Refon generally try to keep friendly relationships with Faron and the coastal kingdoms of Gysikan because of their need to import common goods like wood, grain and olive oil. They also often send emissaries to show support to their dwarven brethren on the mainland.
Although Refon has never fought any wars, the aristocracy is wary of outsiders on the island, and a few fortresses are found on the surface in the case Marifon is ever overrun by invaders. The largest of these fortresses is Kez Júrtal, located furthest from the capital on a remote promontory and the closest thing to a town on the surface.

Structure

Refonic society resembles that of the old Katargysían city-states, which again retain a lot of features of a bronze age society. The island is ruled by the Móalbrek dynasty which controls virtually all the industries of the island from its palace on the top level of the city of Marifon. Goods come to the palace where they are counted and recorded under the kings' supervision, before being redistributed as seen fit.
What little farming is possible on the surface is done close to the palace, so most of those who dwell there are shepherds. Miners, artisans, sailors and fishermen live in the lower levels of Marifon, closer to the underground harbour, and rarely see the surface of their own home. Merchants form a middle class of sorts.

History

The island of Refon was uninhabited before the first dwarves settled there, due to it being surrounded on all sides by tall cliffs. Taking shelter in a large cave, the settlers build the town and eventual city of Marifon from inside out by tunneling upwards to the surface. Up there they discovered a plant that can be used in a powerful medicine, which eventually became a great source of wealth for the Refonians along with fine wool cloth and jewelry.
These goods are used to buy timber, olive oil, dried fruit and other resources that which Refon lacks.
