Sheriff

Sheriff is a Falaran civic title granted to lowborn or highborn citizens who were responsible for the law enforcement of a region. Traditionally Sheriff's were also granted a holding to rule from which included means to fund their law enforcement operation. As such many Sheriffs acted as governors of small regions particularly ones that tended to be experiencing times of hardship that required the direct oversight of a bureaucrat.

Duties

Sheriff's were required to attend to the local affairs of the county including a monthly court wherein their subjects could appeal for justice to their concerns. In addition to this they would lead the local watchmen, often granted a special title determined by the Sheriff, and ensure they were able to enforce the law in the region. As Sheriff's often oversee regions in crisis law enforcement is often their main aim and the source of their local authority and respect.    Within their region Sheriff's were also responsible for the collection of taxes and management of the economy. Their finances were often monitored by the count above them and they were expected to pay profits from their region onwards to the count who was the rightful ruler of the land.
