Cybernetics

In this world Cybernetics are defined as mechanical devices implanted or attached to a living being, often replacing existing body parts.   Cybernetics are divided into two categories, Prosthetics and Augmentations. Prosthetics replace a missing or damaged body part, generally replicating the functions of that organ or limb in an effort to remove the disability. Augmentations go beyond replicating a function and instead provide enhanced or new abilities to the owner. As cybernetic technology becomes more reliable the practice of removing and replacing healthy parts with Augmentations is becoming more prevalent. This is the topic of an ongoing philosophical debate.

Manufacturing

There are several major corporations involved in the manufacture of Cybernetics (or Cyberware as it is commonly called), though none have it as the centerpiece of their portfolio. Some examples include:
  • MacroTech the world's leading manufacturer of prosthetics and one of the leading lobbying groups for military augmentation.
  • Tesoto the pioneer of cybernetic implant and man-machine interface. Still the leading corporation on cybernetic control and collaboration between the human mind and technology.

Social Impact

Although prosthetics are generally accepted, with little stigma. There remains a debate and stigma around augmentations, specifically the practice of removing healthy human tissue to be replaced with machines. However, over the last five years or so a movement to make augmentation more socially acceptable has taken hold among the youth increasing demand for these devices.
Children Technologies
Inventor(s)
Nole Ksum is the inventor of the Neural Link (no called the Linx) and considered the grandfather of all cybernetics.
Access & Availability
Although prosthetics are vastly improved and cheaper than decades past. Augmentation remains uncommon among humanity, generally not covered by insurance, the limited market and experimental nature makes Augmentation a difficult and expensive endeavor.
Discovery
The use of cybernetics began evolving quickly after the invention of the Neural Link in 2025. This device, which allowed for direct neural control of electronic devices revolutionized the cybernetics industry.
