Kaisu

Kaisu is the center of science and culture in Aheila. The Royal Academy of Arts and Science in Yahven is a shining beacon of progress and art. Here, they instruct on every topic from arcana to history to ballet. Though not a military force, their richness in crops and technological advancements make them a valuable ally to Vesmos and even to the reclusive Lasceye. With The Razor's Edge serving as a barrier between them and The Howling Plains, Kaisu enjoys relative safety from the monstrous races that dwell there.

Demographics

Kaisu is predominantly a Human nation, thought there are a fair share of Elves and Gnomes as well. Though Kaisu proports to offer citizenship to anyone who comes seeking knowledge, other races only make up about 10% of the population.

Government

Kaisu is ruled by a council of five, elected individuals. Every five years, they replace one member of the Council, removing the longest-standing member and adding a new Counselor. Declaredly a meritocracy, nominees are chosen based on their contributions to Kaisu. While no one is barred from voting, the reality is that a disproportionate amount of votes come from the citizens of Yahven, and even more specifically the students and teachers of the Royal Academy.

Defences

Kaisu, protected from The Howling Plains by Vesmos and The Razor's Edge, has a relatively small standing army. Beyond city guards and patrolmen to keep the roads and cities safe, Kaisu's main defense is in the ingenuity of its technology, both magical and mundane. In this time of relative peace, Kaisu's safety concerns have less to do with invasion and more to do with crime. To the end, the Council established it's The Inquisitorial Order. Inquisitors are mages and scientists that investigate crimes, hunt criminals, and keep the peace. Answering only to the Council , they are judge, jury and executioner and wield absolute authority.

Industry & Trade

Much of Kaisu's territory is rich and fertile farmland. They export crops such as wheat, corn, potatoes, and other vegetables to Vesmos and Lasceye. What they lack, however, are minerals and resources necessary for the development and construction of new technology. They import ores and precious metals from Vesmos to fuel their scientific and magical research.

Guilds and Factions

The Royal Academy of Kaisu is a patron of science, art, and arcana across the country. Students from across Aheila and even from other continents flock to its campus in Yahven, and it has an extensive program for funding and supporting researchers and artists across the country, even if they do not attend the Academy. As such, their influence over the development and culture of Kaisu is unrivaled.

History

Yahven, the now capital of Kaisu, was founded in the year 106, and only months later, the Royal Academy of Art and Science was opened. When Aheila broke from the crown, Yahven and the surrounding territory were officially part of Vesmos. It wasn't until 140 that Kaisu officially split from Vesmos and established it's capital in Yahven to be a center of knowledge and culture. At this time, the university defacto lead the new nation, which otherwise had no real governance. For nearly ten years they struggled with Vesmos until at last peace was secured by Yusuf Mahar, a professor of political science that took it upon himself to draft a trade deal. In reward, the Royal Academy offered to name Yusuf king of Kaisu, but instead he chose to form a Council of five, selecting individuals that he felt contributed greatly to Kaisu's wellbeing. Over the next few years, an official charter of governance was drafted and the current system took shape.

Geography

Kaisu is mostly comprised of fertile fields and temperate forests. Farms dot the rolling hills of the countryside. The weather is fairly mild, if humid, staying fairly pleasant seven out of ten months, a year.
