Session 8

Session Date: March 18, 2020

General Summary

Although initially worried that Spartan's stone-sickness slumber would leave our party short handed heading into the newly-revealed cavern under the Chimera platforms, that godly wench Trissandra reappeared from whatever holy retreat she'd been on just in time to join our descent, so we tucked the slumbering oaf out of sight before gathering ourselves for the downward plunge. Upon exploring the areas beneath the platforms, it quickly became clear that we were not the first to venture downward, as not only was chamber after chamber devoid of any meaningful loot, but also thoroughly populated with the corpses of those incompetent adventurers who had come before.   Just as we began to question the worth of continuing to explore the tombs-of-no-treasure, we stumbled into a cavern straight out of Al-ē Bah-Bah's Ay-wraybe-een Evenings, littered end-to-end with piles of treasures and trinkets from all over the worlds, more wealth than I'd ever seen outside the vaults at GreenGott's. Wary of the inevitable boobytrap, I slowly began looking around for a weapon worthy of my station, but before we could make any meaningful progress, that damned drunken fool Lothar resumed his eternal crusade to fuck with the priestess by flinging treasures at her head, missing his target (per usual), but releasing serpentine hell as the cavern began to shake and the floors began flooding with snakes in all sizes, styles, and states of decay.   Lothar and Trissandra made for a theretofore unseen river on the south wall, while myself and our recently acquired (but still not entirely trustworthy) thief Ayri did our best to directly traverse the piles of riches and make haste for the far end of the cavern. Although suffering various scrapes and bites along the way, we all managed to escape into an antechamber above the largest pile of treasure in the cavern, whereupon we healed our wounds before continuing deeper into the caves.   Beyond a curious collection of tapestries depicting various scenes of defeat for adventurers at the hands of what looked to be a Chimera, we found nothing of interest throughout the remaining chambers we explored....until, of course, we stumbled into the lair of the actual Chimera depicted therein. Slumbering near the far wall of a room adorned with more of those creature statues we'd first seen outside, the Chimera had a team of golems working to construct yet another victory tapestry, and in watching their effort, we discerned the true nature of the artwork, as the mindless monsters were picking scales and feathers from the slumbering beast, and using them to imprison none other than that ridiculous fey dragon who'd roped us into joining the RoadShow in first place!   Although Ayri and I had stealthily crept to hidden vantage points behind the statues in order to formulate a plan of attack, our best laid plans were foiled by the overburdened priestess (whose Paelorian devotional sabbatical seemed to have sapped what little adventuring skill she possessed) attempting to leap down into the room while wearing full plate, as her ungainly clattering awoke the slumbering beast and triggered the most dangerous combat we've yet undertaken.   After a round of ineffective attacks from our team, and an opening salvo from the Chimera which sobered up even Lothar, it was Ayri who discerned the secret of the Chimera's lair, utilizing the energy of the statue platforms to land a critical hit on the beast, leading the way for Lothar to then leap onto his own platform and unkeash that Kamehameha wave he loves so much, ending the Chimera once and for all.   While Ayri and Lothar ensured the beast was dead and looted his corpse for valuable crafting materials, Triss and I made for the pedestal beneath the tapestry on the far wall, and, though she beat me there, so enamored was the priestess with some hammer she found there that she failed to notice the giant tome laying to the side. Sensing a connection between this volume and that presented to me previously by the witch in the woods, I slipped the grimoire into the folds of my robe for inspection at a later date just as the rest of the party arrived at the tapestry.   Working together, we freed the fey dragon from the wall, and as he began speaking his thanks in that ridiculous accent of his, I could only wonder what fresh hell he would unleash upon us next....   -Excerpt from the Journal of Moses Hamato
