Akadia (ah KAY de ah)
the Land of the Roc Hunters
On the Portius Peninsula, extending south off the tip of the Thoamaine Peninsula, the Akadian tribes have lived hunting the roc in the southern mountains and their valleys for over a thousand years. Akadian archers are coveted as some of the most prized mercenaries across the continent. These archers are well known for their deadly accuracy, and strong pull arm, with a reputation of fierce loyalty to those that hire them. In their homeland, Akadians live as seminomadic tribal people, dwelling in lowland villages during the winters, then moving, when the seasons grow warm, into the mountains heights to live as hunter-gatherers. While they hunt most wildlife for food and supplies, the Roc are the prize for which the people strive for. A single roc can feed a tribe for months. The birds are a sacred creature for the Akadians, as are the hunts for these beasts. They are honored not only for the needed food they provide, but also as the apex predator of the region, able to hunt man and other large beast. It is the roc of the region that keep most other large predator population low, protecting the tribes from most deadly creatures that trouble nearby nations. As such the people of Portius know well to keep the roc numbers in balance. Over hunting could bring an end to their way of life, as could letting the great birds multiply. Many Akadians die each year, prey to these giants, and a solo hunter bringing down a bird alone is a great honor for the individual and his tribe. Roc feathers have significant status for Akadians, being worn as dress and on head gear for status.
