Fafnir Peninsula
the Western Fortress
The fafnir Peninsula, usually shortened to Fafnir by sailors of the Sea of the Ten Sisters, and called 'the Western Fortress' by the Dwarf, is a rocky mountainous peninsula extending off the southern edge of the Western Reach of Ethae, east of Gir Kur and south of the Gir Kur. It is bordered to the west by the Gulf of Ad Allir, the west by the Sea of the Ten Sisters and to the south by the greater Cota Ocean.
Dwarven legend claims the peninsula and its deep valley, sleep cliff terrain, were created before time, in the Time of Aterleg, when the first dwarves warred with the Dragon of Gir kur. In that time, the peninsulas were one, but split after the dragons were defeated to sperate the lands of dragons and the lands of dwarves. Scholars have debated this story for centuries. The account contradicts many agreed facts of history, such as the Time of Aterleg is considered a period of prehistory before human, dwarf, and elf existed. It also goes against common dwarven teaches of the dwarves and dragons being early allies when their ancestors moved into the Cutting Mountains and worked together to create metal. A confusing wrinkle in the usually universal dwarven fact-based narrative of their history. Stonefoot Carvings, usually abundant thought-out dwarven lands are surprisingly absent through much of Fafnir, with the first appearing only in the mid to late Kephic Age.
As implied Fafnir has long been a part of dwarven history. The dwarven kingdom of Yamakyn was established in the early wars against the Juhl'are of Anbar. After the fall of the Dwarves of Poe and the Kephic Empire western front pushed back to their borders in the Cutting Mountains, Yamakyn was fortified and expanded to control the entire peninsula, keeping the dark elves in a constant division between two fronts in their war against the dwarves. Fafnir has remained in dwarven control since, as the Yamakyn dwarves fought of dark elves, dragons, Orc, and every threat to their lands.
As the Kephic Empire has declined, so too has Yamakyn. The nation has shank in size of the centuries, not by invasion or defeat, but by the greatest enemy of all, time. Yamakyn borders now only encompassed the northern region of the peninsula. The dwarves consolidating to remain strong. The southern lands of Fafnir have seen an influx of non-dwarf settlers for the first time in recorded history. Since the beginning of the Novyum, Human have built their homes in abandoned dwarven cities. Though this did not sit well with the dwarves and fights were common, a tentative peace has developed over the last century. Tentions remain however, and past wrongs on both sides threaten to resurface into all-out war. Time will tell if this land is destined for war, like so many others in the Novyum Age.
