Swamp Cypress

Bald Cypress

Native to Tinjir, gulf cypress, or sometimes swamp cypress, is a hardy tree, tough and able to adapt to nearly any soil its seed lands in. Muddy, dry, salty or swampy, the tree is found abundantly throughout Tobia's Gulf coastal lands. This cypress is known for its bright green needle-like leaves during spring that turn rusty colors during fall. It is a long-lived, slow-growing tree, with grey to reddish bark and wide base, growing up to a thin trunk.

The origins of this tree is thought to be in Shakosha, the Great Swamp of Old, what is today the Drymire. All the gulf cypress are blieved to be from surviving cones from trees of the ancient swamp, seeding the land before Dragonfall destroyed Karasaanu and turned Anbar into a desert.

The gulf cypress wood is hardy and long lasting, ideal for construction projects such as bridges and building frames. Its resilience to water makes it ideal for outdoor projects. Tradintionally the Nugata use this wood for their wardrums, and those in the Kingdom of Bronze find its odorless nature preferable for use for interior wall lining.

A wood of this tree called 'pecky cypress' is highly valued by the nobility and wealthy across the globe for decorative paneling and carvings. It is a prehistoric wood of fallen trees that is still useable, preserved under the the right conditions, such as thick peat and muck, where air and water no longer cannot reach it. Expeditions are annually arranged by the wealthiest to journey deep into the Drymire looking for the remains of pecky cypress. A dangerous, but lucrative venture, as "drymire pecky" is always the most desired.
