Throughout the eastern expanse of the Thoamaine Peninsula are what the locals call ‘the Independent Peoples.’ For the most part, these are the small mountain towns and fishing villages dotting the peninsula east and south of Nugator. None of these communities willingly ally themselves to any larger organized power, or to each other for that matter. The people are fiercely independent, preferring to live their life in their isolated regions. That’s not to say they refuse to communicate or trade with the world beyond their villages, the people are friendly to travelers, they simply do not value deep connections with those outside their personal communities. The sharp rocky mountains of central Thoamaine for the most part have shielded the Independent Peoples from Orc attacks, while the marshy coastal lands limit contact from the sea. Though largely disconnected from the world beyond their homes, historically, the people have accepted whatever Novyum power from the Heartlands that claim control of their region, as long as they are largely left to themselves. Many villagers are of Normon blood, tracing their founding to one of the many invasions somewhere in history. In spite of their desired independence, recent years have seen these villages call out for adventurers and mercenaries to come defend their villages from increasing threats from south of the mountains.
