Floryda
"That bard-swamp hellhole"
Well known for its infamous bard college, entertainment district, and discreet means of transportation, many people come here to visit, but very few people stay to build a life here if given a choice.
Demographics
Although humans make up the vast majority of this population, there are sizable halfling, wood elf, hill dwarf, and gnome populations that reside here.
Government
Although it may be easy to think otherwise, Floryda actually has a governing body. Formerly a plutocracy, the current govenrnment is heavily influenced by the Council of Fifths, the governing body of Orizon. Despite being hundreds of miles away, many nonnative resources in Floryda are shipped from Orizon and the City of Trees. Taxes in the city are lower than they were prior to its partnership with Orizon; these taxes are mostly used to revitalize the city; however a small cut (of undisclosed value) is sent back to Orizon. City infastructure has improved and taxation has decreased in the past decade since the Orizon-Floryda partnership; however, some of the Floryd inhabitants are concerned that this trade may cost them certain freedoms, especially after the opening of the surface camps...
Districts
Rolando Hills: Many of the wealthier humans and elves live on the safe side of the skyland known as Rolando Hills. This skyland houses a mine of precious metals such as iron, copper, and illuminum, but is most famous for its quirky inhabitants and debaucherous Blacklight District. Through the glitz and pandemonium on the other side of Rolando's Crest, lies an authoritarian mining camp where laborers work until they are exhausted, or sent to the surface camps as punishment...
Baker's Bluff: A less weathly, but moderately self-sufficient mixed population resides on south-east skyland, Baker's Bluff. This skyland is home to a hybrid rural-suburban population. Much of the food in Rolando Hills is produced in and imported from Baker's Bluff. Although this skyland supports many Flordyn inhabitants, there is a surprisingly high number of anti-collectivist individuals who form their own militia, refusing help from Flordyn Peace Keepers
Floryda Main: There are sporadic homes located on the largest skyland; the same can be said about the surface-dwellers who live underneath the Floryd skylands. The largest skyland in Floryda is also the namesake of the Flordyn nation. Although historically the heart of Floryda, much of this skyland resembles the surface of Floryda as well: covered with swamps and dotted with jagged, rocky outcroppings. In recent history, mainly lower-class commoners and students of the bard college live on this skyland
Floryda Surface: Life on the Floryda surface is in notable contrast to the extravagance that can be found in the skylands above. The small and sparse settlements on the swampy surface can hardly be considered communities. No notable trade occurs and outsiders often attempt to find any means possible to avoid travelling through this territory inhabited by dangerous flora and fauna, potentially hostile locals, and the authorities commanding the mysterious surface camps.
Guilds and Factions
Those who seek employment as chefs and entertainers would surely have their work cut out for them in this city. Like many other large cities, the Intercontinental Merchants Guild has a presence in many shops throughout the entertainment district and those in good standing with the guild may have an easier time bartering or finding specific goods.
The Audiomancers is a young guild founded by ambitious students and professors at Rozin Floryda's College for Bards and is comprised of many creative musicians who use their arts for both entertainment and practical uses. Although they may not have a unified purpose, members of this guild may have an easier time getting booked sound bars and taverns who recognize the Bands of Adser commonly worn by audiomancers.
Points of interest
Rozin Floryda’s Bard College (RFCB): The city-state of Floryda gained its name from the founder of the bard college above the southernmost tip of Amerinth. At the time of the school's founding in AB 934, there were only few people living in the skylands now known as Floryida were sparse, isolated communities much like the present circumstances of those living on the surface. In the centuries since the school's founding, Rozin Floryda's Bard College has developed a reputation nearly as strong as Altus' and people with a strong interest in the bardic arts come from far and wide and order to learn from some of the greatest and most inventive bards on Alterra.
Altars of Cremphonica: These floating altars were constructed by theology students attending the RFCB as a means to show respect to the goddess of sound and melodies. People can visit to pay their respects and during the Festival Cremphonica, these altars are converted into stages for selected bards and groups to perform not only for the people of Floryda, but for the gods themselves.
