Chapter 9, Session 2: A trip to the library
General Summary
The blood it's EVERYWHERE!!Recovering from their blood drinking experience, the party opened up the trap door and looked into the dungeon below, as they mentally prepared themselves to delve below, the group quickly 360'd and decided to go back to the surface and take a long rest for the night so that they could recover resources and so that Fen could prepare darkvision for the members of the party who could not see in darkness.
- Mimsi reacts in extreme subtlety to taking damage.
While they rested, the party were hit by the first effect of Fallrock and many of them became proficient in nature or survival. Kodo however, completed a private conversation with the DM that will not be shared in this recap.
When they woke, around 8 O'clock in the evening, the party decided they could not put off going into Fallrock dungeons any longer and so, with many of the group being hit with the Darkvision spell, they descended and traverse the small and slightly cramped tunnel of the dungeon.
Before long, the party found themselves stopped by a hard and strong iron door with a large knocker in the centre. On investigating the door, Olympia found it was written in 'Dread Speech' an old variant of common that did not conform to Kodo and Mimsi's 'tongue of Sun and Moon'. The door said 'Welcome to the Silliscor Library, scholars are welcome'.
Seeing this message, Fen offered to investigate the door for magic and shuffled his way to the front of the group before touching the knocker. At which point, the mage had to make a Charisma saving throw and disappeared from view... immediately throwing the party into a panic and prompting Olympia to immediately touch the knocker and vanish as well. Eventually followed by the group, some of whom failed the charisma saving throw and were heavily damaged as a result but all managed to get through the door; Kodo and Lyren Killian chose a different approach with Lyren checking the door for magic and, with a 30 arcana check, stating the properties of the door and the pair of them instead used Dimension Door to teleport to the other side.
The party grouped up for a time and talked to one another in the centre of the library amid whispers and rustling paper; Olympia decided to wander the shelves and noticed some books were well maintained and looked to be in good condition... leading her to remark that high quality reading material was 'scary'...
In that moment, a group of crazed Aist Mages moved into position and, in tandem, all cast Fireball at the party; hitting all of them, including Lyren but not Olympia, for massive damage that very nearly dragged several of their members to unconsciousness.
With that, combat started against these mages who, covered in parchment and scrolling like a makeshift armour. Aggressively attacked the party as they claimed someone told them the party were here to offer knowledge and meat to them. Mimsi attempted to offer her files on Hook and Knife to them but this seemed to make the mages angrier due to her poor persuasion check. The party knew they needed to get the fight finished quickly due to the extremely poor health many of them were in.
With that, combat properly started now with Mimsi throwing her bead of fireballs at the mages and significantly damaged them whilst Fen used his Shadow Blade and a lightning bolt to damage and kill some of them. Combat raged on, with Mimsi brutally beheading an enemy mortal kombat style and Anastasia throwing a glass vial in the face of a mage before killing him with her axe. Combat came to an end as Fen, nearly tricked into being heavily damaged by a mage with invisibility, called in the Kodo cavalry and the mage was killed with two darts. Ez, shaking uncontrollably from being exposed to the fireball explosions, transformed into his chalice state and began healing the party as much as he possibly could during the combat alongside Anastasia and Olympia. Finally, Lyren showed some of the new powers he had discovered by creating a 'planar shock' that tore through and killed one of the mages.
The combat came to an end and the party took some time to loot the area, finding three books that were of interest to them as well as several dull but valuable ones; the books of note were: A reflection on the True Victory: A reflection on heroism, battle and planar aversion, The Biography of the Scribe; the most mysterious of the Dread King's lieutenants, Why the door matters and Planar feasting. The party stowed these books and decided to move on to the next room, realising they had to move with more care, they used a mixture of spells and healing potions to help them recover health. With that, they moved on and found the next room at the end of the tunnel and, stealthing in, they found a large laboratory filled with arcane lights. They saw two Firbolg's with cracked but large bodies who were whispering to vats filled with clay golems forming a large goblin-like shape... at the other side of the room was a grate that led down to the next point of the dungeon and, with that, session ended.
