Kontelezh Naoned

Structure

The County of Naoned is one of nine nominally equal vassal states of the Duchy of Letha, often serving as the region's capital in the past, though this status is currently disputed. Naoned is centered on the city of Naoned, which serves as both the County and Duchy Seat. The surrounding area, the Biskonti Naoned, falls under the direct control of the Konts of Naoned as their crownlands.   Naoned is divided into 6 subvassals, including the Biskonti Naoned. These are the Biskonti Retz, the Marches of Ancenis, La Mee and Gournelle, also called Gwiniegi Naoned, and the Lordship of Lordship of Mitaud. A sizeable portion of the noble families of semi-autonomous Barony of Redon is also considered a vassal to Naoned.   Compared to the remote holdings of the Penn-ar-Bed, Naoned maintains strong direct control over its holdings, as the urbanization of the region and ample transportation networks allow more direct oversight of noble and peasant alike.

Culture

The Nantais possess an adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit, known for producing adventurers and merchants. It is a bustling cosmopolitan melting pot, drawing in inhabitants and visitors alike from all over Letha and Alvez. Even in the ar goat, the river trades maintain this culture.

History

The Borderlands

During the reign of Gradlon Mwar, the Petty Kingdom of Werran controlled the Ar Briwer and the Liger River, enjoying lucrative trade with its powerful neighbor, with most of its settlements in what is now the Barony of Gwenrann. During The Fall of Ys, the region's coastline was decimated by a tsunami and massive flooding.   Werran remained a sleepy region under the reign of Waroch I, Kont of Gwened, who annexed the region to control the Liger region. Werran put up little resistance to the shift, and quickly welcomed Gwened's leadership, establishing what would become the city of Naoned at the meeting of the Liger and the Erzh Rivers in 304 SI.   Naoned was the site of a major battle during the War of the Black Dog, when the Sea Dogs of Conomor the Cursed launched a devastating attack of Naoned and Gwened, reducing both to ashes.

From the Ashes

Gwened's power was shattered, and Kernev was decimated by Conomor's campaign, but Anjev, Akitania and Gallia had taken note of the Peninsula, and sought to make use of a trade network between the Liger and Silvercoast, of which Naoned would be a key focal point. The region would go back and forth between various rulers, returning to Letha during the reign of Judicael I, falling to Gallia during the reing of Frodalus I in the late 7th century.   The region would be hotly contested, the focal point of the revolts of Morman and Wilhomarc'h. In 735 SI, King Nevenoe I formally annexed the region back into Letha officially. Nevenoe also built up the Barony of Redon, establishing a major abbey in the region during his reign.   King Salaun built up the city of Gwenrann as a religious college, gaining a defensive wall and city administration as it grew. The college and the growing development of the Whitemarsh saltworks, made it a necessity for more direct control, leading to the establishment of the Barony, originally an appanage for a younger sibling of the Konts of Naoned. Salaun constructed fortresses along the Marches of Neustria, establishing defensive outposts in Naoned, Ancenis and La Mee.   For the next hundred years, the region was marked by internal conflict and foreign threats. Naoned was involved in both Lethan Civil wars, fighting against Judicael I of Kernev. These wars greatly weakened Naoned, allowing it to be captured by a Fomorian host in 812 SI.

Fomorian Rule

With the capture of its largest city, Letha was quickly conquered by the Viking forces. The Feth Fiada swept across the lands, entirely covering the city, which fell into disrepair during the 30 year period of Formorian rule. While the forces of Hastings Fireforged controlled the entire peninsula, the occupation was most keenly felt in Naoned. The city and its surroundings were abandoned by the Bediz , until the Dug Alan "Al Louarn" II reconquered the region and was crowned Dug of Letha, establishing Naoned as his capital.

The Poisoner's Game and Konstanza's War

Naoned remained the capital until the period of intrigue known as the Poisoner's Game , where control of the peninsula shifted to rival Roazhon (~894 SI). Naoned returned as the seat of Ducal power during the reign of Dug Alan IV in 972 SI Naoned was a central in the Wars of Konstanza I, becoming an entry point for Fae refugees during the Heresy of Albi . When Konstanza refused to surrender the Nathair to Arnaud Amalric , a fleet of Akitanian warships besieged the harbor. Despite a brutal campaign, the city remained free until the Siege broke.

Territories

The County of Naoned is located in the Southeast of the Duchy of Letha, where the The Armorican Peninsula meets Lightcoast on the Pleg-mor Gwaskogn. Naoned controls the all important mouth of the Liger River, one of the most important waterways in the North.   On the North bank of the River, the Barony of Gwenrann just out on its marshy peninsula. To its Northeast, the small Lordship of Mitaud and part of the autonomous region of the Barony of Redon border the Kontelezh Gwened.   Redon and the March of La Mee make up the Northern territories, bordering the Kontelezh Aleth and the Kontelezh Roazhon.   The Marches of La Mee, Ancenis and March of Gwiniegi Naoned border the Anjevin territories of the Lordship of Pouancé , the Lordship of Beauveau , Kontelezh Angers and the Viscounty of Mauges.   Goulaine and Biskonti Retz, both located on the South Bank of the Liger, border the Grand-Duchy of Akitania, specifically the Lordship of Montaigu.   In the center of it all, the Biskonti Naoned is the seat of the County, housed in the great city of Naoned.

The Ar Mor Naoned/The Naoned Coasts

The Menhir Coast

- The Menhir Coast, named for the numerous megalithic structures that dot its span, stretches from the Ele River to the Gwilen. While the Menhir Coast is largely contiguous with the borders of Kontelezh Gwened and the Mor Bihan, a small stretch of it includes Whitemarsh, on the South Bank of the Gwilen, but North of Pen-Be. The Menhir Coast is dominated by local cabotage trade, as small barges ply the relatively calm waters between Naoned and Gwened.

Lover's Coast

- Stretching from the Pen-Be to the Liger River Estuary, Lover's Coast is named for a mythical pair of doomed lovers who met their tragic fate in its waters, a popular subject in songs and poems. The coastline, made up of rocky cliffs interposed by sandy beaches and low-lying wetlands. Salt pans are found along this coastline, which includes the Gwenrann Pensinsula and the river's mouth.

Jade Coast

The Coastline along the Pleg-mor Gwaskogn is the Jade Coast, named after the distinctive green colour of its seawater. The coast stretches from the Southern bank of the Liger River to the Marais Lethaned Marshland. The Beg Gweltaz is a notable navigational point for ships approaching Naoned from Silvercoast , as it signals the transition from coastal to river navigation. North of the point is marked by fine-sand beaches, with low-cliffs and maritime pine forests. Southwards from the point is made up of jagged rocky shores until the marshlands are reached. The coastline is a hotbed of smuggling between Letha and Akitania.
