Republic of Tanatra

Home to the oldest cities in the world, Tanatra has witnessed hundreds of thousands of years of history.

An ancient tree spreads its boughs, shading Allfire Park in the city of Tanatra's Taraneshi District. Beneath its branches a black bear dozes, fortune tellers set up shop, and adventurers play chess. In a distant corner, the pale tiefling Priestess Nix speaks with pilgrims. On the edge of the park, the halfling bard Azrael the Librarian leans out the door of his bookstore, smoking a pipe. Nix, Azrael, and the werebear druid Tengri are world famous adventurers, working with their companions in the Company of the Seven Stars...   ...a phalanx of gnomish swordsmen dressed all in black fly in formation above a large neighborhood market. Everyone knows that these often invisible guards could be anywhere at any time...   ...From the side of a cliff above the city, a flock of kenku takes flight. Caisheni who are half crow and half humanoid, colonies of them have lived in the rocky mountain above Tanatra from time immemorial. From the city, elaborate tunnels lead up and through the mountain to the cave systems above. An elven wizard bends to fit as a silent kenku leads him through the tunnels. After months of working side by side with this colony, the wizard is being adopted by one of the clans. Torchlight flickers on the walls of the cave just around the next corner. A low harsh chanting or singing is punctuated by an occasional note pitched higher. Kenku as a rule collect shiny things like their crow ancestors. This collecting can often take the form of initiating people in the clan. Some kenku clans have been known to contain few actual kenku. The wizard smiles as he turns the corner and joins in the chanting...   ...A crowd swells outside the Phoenix Theater, waiting for the doors to open and for the aasimar bard Esreithane to take the stage. Her day job as the Cernoan ambassador to Tanatra keeps her in contact with the rich and powerful, but her real love is for the merchants and commoners who come to her shows. As she takes the stage, her golden hair shining, she grows wings and launches into "Rheszhebar the Dragon", followed quickly by the "Song of Faendral" and "Feas and Issandr." The crowd weeps and cheers at each turn, sometimes silent, sometimes thunderous...
The land of Tanatra is one of the oldest gnomish regions in the world, and it is the last of their ancient homelands still in gnomish hands. Many believe this enormous valley surrounded by the forbidding Tanatran Mountains is where gnomes originated from. In the southern and deepest part of the valley is the enormous, crystal-clear Lake Aghara, from which three of the world's largest rivers begin. The Druin River flows southwest into the Carentan Forest; the Tanaghana River flows southeast to the plains of the centaur-ruled High Kingdom of K'Shetriyah-Ch'rth; and the Shaedra River flows north to the elven Empire of Halaan   There are eight major cities in the nation of Tanatra, all claiming to be the second oldest city in the world. Everyone knows that the City of Tanatra is the oldest.   The Pewa are gnome assassin-mages who act as spy network, secret police and elite special forces.
Much of Tanatra City is built underground and into the surrounding mountains.
Forest gnomes are said to be descended from both gnomes and fey.
The High Speaker of the Tanatran Council, Andramos Tertayn
Pewa have kept Tanatra safe for millennia
