Notable things
The Spice Islands harbour a unique disease which seems only to affect visitors, the locals having developed a level of immunity. This is the Screaming Sickness. Those affected suffer terrible fevers and nightmares, and are prone to irrational fits of screaming. It is believe to be carried by biting insects, and thus doesn't seem to be contracted while on the ocean, only whilst on the islands. The natives, however, have a preventative treatment offered to visitors - Spice Tea. Also drunk by the natives it is a tasty and refreshing drink that prevents the contraction of the sickness. It does not, however, treat the disease once contracted, is not treatable with the Spice Tea. Once infected, the afflicted must fight it off themselves, seek the help of a local healer or risk going insane.Culture
Each island in the Kulubadi chain has a unique culture, tradition and history. There is trade and cultural exchange between the islands, though some treat each other with wariness or even mistrust. The islands to the east tend to be more welcoming of visitors and Pala even encourages tourism. The further west, the less far outsiders have traditionally travelled, and so foreigners are less expected.
Public Agenda
As long as the spices continue to flow from Port Sabor to Milagon (as well as some for bribes to the smugglers of the Acuerdos), the islanders get to live in relative autonomy and independence. The Spicers' Guild is an ever present reminder that the spice must continue to flow.
Assets
The unique climates of the Spice Islands means that this is the only place Ara a large number of products can grow. Most of these are spices, important in food preservation and as luxury goods. They also export some significant spell and potion components.
History
The Spice Islands were, according to local myth, created by the Demi-God Kui. He used a magical fish hook to draw the islands out of the sea. It is said that the final island he drew up from the sea, he tore a hole in the earth. The earth grew angry and swallowed him and those around him.
