Personal history

He grew up in a closeted, wealthy household in Szhen-Dgou. He was not allowed to roam freely, and so he would dream of adventure through stories and books. He found the Tales of Captain Thorne and especially loved Eye of Mercannan.   One night, when he was about 13 years old, he snuck out of his house, against the strict rules of his father. He borrowed a boat and rowed around the Szhen-Dgou, pretending to be Captain Thorne. He rowed to a small island, little more that a rock and tied up the boat, imagining himself landing on Thorne’s secret island. All of a sudden, he was aware of a foul smell. Turning, he saw in the moonlight a wretched looking old woman, soaking wet. Her hair was long and frayed hair, her face withered and warty. She smiled, revealing black teeth – the smell was her breath – like rotted seaweed and fish guts. She asked why a young dragonborn would be out alone in a dangerous place at this time of night. In his youthful foolishness, he replied he was no mere child, but a brave adventurer. She cackled. And asked why he adventured. He replied, to find great treasures. And what would he like to be found, she asked. The Eye of Mercannon, he replied.   She cackled greatly. Her eyes seemed to glow. She raised a hand – one bearing great iron-like claws, and in an echoing voice said: “It is your destiny to spend your life to seek the stone. From you, the Eye of Mercannon shall be returned. You must find it in the Midlands. You and your family shall be free and It shall help the balance of this world”.   She lowered her hand to his shoulder. He felt an icy burn pass through him. He backed away. She said to go, before she eats him. He rowed back to his home, excited he had been told by this strange woman he would find the stone. He told no-one. For a while, his childish excitement continued. Soon, though, it passed from his mind.   Then, in his late 20s, as he was due to marry his future wife, he began to dream of that night. He resumed his search, spending hours studying, looking for information. This drove his betrothed away. He sailed around Mitzu looking for clues. His family shunned him. He began to realise it was not a blessing, but a curse. The old woman had been a hag. With nothing left, he sailed to Ebrion, thinking this was the foretold Mid-Lands. He washed up, almost penniless in Little Mitzu. He took little jobs to pay for food. Then more to fund his searches, but he never managed to break away. He entered a blind auction for an inn, and only discovered the name of it when he won, the Eye of Mercannon. He thought this was the twisted interpretation of the prophesy. Until Gamble entered, and he felt his shoulder burn again.   He tells her he discovered the Island was not in a fixed place, but roamed the Badumin Sea. It had to be summoned, with a special bugle formed from a conch shell. It is said to lie with him in his tomb, none but he knowing its value. He would have gone after it, but things kept keeping him in the Inn. Hands her the Pearl, saying it would be useful if ever she needed aid in Mitzu.
