Shar (Shar)

Overview

Daughter of Mehena and twin sister of Baara. Since her earliest battles with Baara (which are said to continue to this day), Shar has gained dominion over pain hidden but not forgotten, carefully nurtured bitterness, and quiet revenge for old slights. Deeply twisted, the Lady of Loss favors secrets, underhanded dealings, and subterfuge. She uses her mortal worshipers as pawns in a perverse game against everything that has been, is, and will be. Patron of the Shadow Weave, a corrupting magical force based upon nothingness and mad secrets, the Mistress of the Night bolsters her impressive power with temptation and guile.

PORTFOLIO AND RESPONSIBLITIES

She is a goddess whose portfolio includes evil magics, caverns, dark, dungeons, forgetfulness, loss, night, secrets, the Underdark. All regard her as a dark and vengeful deity, but many seek out her servants in times of grief or bereavement. There is a pervasive belief that her clergy aids those who have been wronged or who have suffered a great loss. Instead of offering release from the pangs of grief, though, Shar’s clerics reinforce supplicants’ regrets and feelings of betrayal, turning their focus to bitterness and revenge. Good clerics (particularly those of Mehena, Molotl, and of course, Baara) warn of the dangers of seeking such solace, but desperation often gets in the way of better judgment, and the ranks of Shar’s clergy swell with each passing year.

Meta Information

Obedience

Spend an hour reliving or imagining terrible things that happened to you. This process is mentally strenuous, dealing 1d6 points of nonlethal damage. You cannot allow anyone else to know of your struggles: speaking of them, showing distress while considering them, or even asking for assistance in healing the nonlethal damage negates the benefits of this obedience. When you fail a saving throw against a creature’s spell or spell-like ability, you gain a +4 profane bonus on saving throws against any of that creature’s abilities for 1 minute.

Divine Boon

1: Obscurement (Sp) obscuring mist 3/day, invisibility 2/day, or deeper darkness 1/day
2: Path of Darkness (Sp) Once per day, you can use shadow walk as a spell-like ability. When you reach your desired endpoint along the shadow path, you materialize directly where you desire instead of being shunted in a random direction as you normally would. Furthermore, if you use this ability on an unwilling creature, the creature takes a –2 penalty on its saving throw.
3: Fleshrending Ally (Sp) Once per day as a standard action, you can summon an interlocutor kyton (Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 3 174) to serve you. You gain telepathy with the interlocutor to a range of 100 feet. The kyton follows your commands perfectly for 1 minute for every Hit Die you possess before it vanishes back to its home on the Plane of Shadow. The interlocutor refuses to follow any commands that would cause it to act in an overly good or chaotic way. Such commands earn a spiky snarl of disapproval, or could even cause the kyton to attack you if the command is particularly egregious.

Example Antipaladin Code

Bound to the mysterious allure of Shar, Mistress of the Night, I solemnly dedicate my being to her endless dance of secrets, vengeance, and darkness. In the ever-consuming void of her gaze, I find strength and purpose, pledging to uphold:
  • To remember every slight, betrayal, and wound, ensuring none are forgotten in the march of time.
  • To become a sanctuary for those nursing their own pains and grudges, guiding them into Shar's embracing shadows.
  • To foster the allure of the unknown, ensuring that darkness always conceals more than it reveals.
  • To master the arts of corrupting magic, drawing upon the void and ancient, maddening secrets to bend reality to my will.
  • To uphold the sanctity of the Shadow Weave, ensuring its power remains a closely guarded secret of our order.
  • To employ the powers of darkness and night, using them as both shield and sword in the Lady of Loss's service.
  • To never offer hollow comfort, but instead stoke the fires of resentment, ensuring the world never forgets its hurts.
  • To undermine the efforts of Mehena, Molotl, Baara, and all who seek to banish the comforting embrace of shadows.
